Why Was Jesus Tempted? The Reason That Changes How You See Your Struggles.

Stay with me for a moment… because this is not just a Bible story. This has everything to do with you, with me, and with those struggles no one else sees.

There’s a question that feels a bit uncomfortable if we really think about it:
If Jesus was the Son of God… why did He have to be tempted?
Wasn’t it unnecessary?
Wasn’t it obvious He would win?

But when you pause… you begin to see something deeper.

The Bible says Jesus was led into the wilderness—not by accident, but on purpose. It wasn’t a mistake… it was part of the plan. And there, in that dry place, without food, without human strength… after 40 days… that’s when the temptation came.

Not before.
Not when He was strong.
But when He was weak.

And that already tells us a lot.

Jesus was not tempted to see if He would fall…
He was tempted to show us how to overcome.

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15)

Jesus didn’t avoid temptation… He faced it.
He didn’t take shortcuts… He walked through the full process.

Why?

Because He didn’t just come to save you… He came to understand you.

There’s something very human about this.
You and I often feel like God is distant… like He doesn’t understand what we’re going through.

But in Jesus… God chose to come near.
He chose to live what we live.

He knows what it’s like to be hungry…
He knows what it’s like to be tired…
He knows what it’s like to be tempted when you’re vulnerable.

And still… He chose obedience.

When the devil told Him, “Turn these stones into bread”…
it wasn’t just hunger… it was pressure.

It was using His power for Himself.
It was solving things quickly… without waiting on God.

Does that sound familiar?

When temptation comes to you… it usually comes like that:
fast… logical… convenient.

But Jesus responded differently.
He responded with the Word.

Not with emotion.
Not with impulse.
With truth.

Then came another temptation… testing God.
“If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down…”

In other words: “Prove who You are.”

But Jesus didn’t need to prove anything.

And there’s a powerful lesson there…

Not everything you can do… you should do.
Not everything that shows power… comes from God.

And finally… came the most dangerous temptation:
shortcuts to obtain what God had already promised.

Kingdoms… power… authority…
but without the cross.

And Jesus said no.

Because He understood something we often forget:
what comes easy… almost never comes from God.

So… why did Jesus go through all this?

Not to prove that He was strong.
But to show us that it is possible to overcome.

Not with our own strength…
but through dependence on God.

He also made something very clear:
temptation is not sin.

Jesus was tempted… and never sinned.

That changes everything.

Because sometimes you feel guilty just for being tempted…
but the struggle itself doesn’t define you.

What you do in the middle of the struggle… does.

And there’s something else… something many people overlook.

Jesus fasted for 40 days… not to impress anyone…
but to fully align Himself with the Father.

Fasting was not weakness… it was preparation.

While His body was becoming weaker…
His spirit was becoming stronger.

And here’s something important you need to understand…

That wilderness was also preparation.

Not because Jesus needed to be “corrected”…
but because before facing what was coming—rejection, persecution, and the cross—
He fully grounded Himself in the will of the Father.

But that preparation was not just for Him…

It was designed in such a way that it became a lesson for us.

Jesus didn’t prepare to see if He could overcome…
He prepared to show us how to overcome.

And here’s a key many ignore:

Some battles are not won with strength…
they are won with depth.

With a relationship with God.
With time in the secret place.

With a faith that doesn’t depend on emotions.

In the end… Jesus came out of the wilderness different.
Not defeated… but ready.

Ready to begin His ministry.
Ready to fulfill His purpose.

And that is also for you.

There are wilderness seasons that are not punishment…
they are preparation.

There are moments when God is not abandoning you…
He is forming you.

Let me leave you with this thought…
If Jesus, being who He was, went through temptation…
why do we think we shouldn’t?

The difference is not in avoiding it…
but in how you face it.

And now, I invite you to join me in this prayer…

Lord,
there are moments when I feel weak, when temptation feels stronger than me.
But today I understand that You went through it… and You overcame.
Teach me to depend on You, to respond with Your Word, and not take shortcuts that pull me away from Your will.
Strengthen my spirit in the middle of my wilderness…
and help me come out of it stronger, closer to You.
Amen.
