Why did Jesus say that the eyes are the lamp of the body?

What you’re looking at today… might be shaping your life more than you realize.

In the Gospel of Matthew 6:22–23, Jesus says that the eye is the lamp of the body. It may sound strange at first, but if you really think about it… it makes a lot of sense.

The eye is the entrance.

Everything you see… enters.
Everything you consume… stays.
Everything you allow yourself to look at… little by little shapes who you are.

Jesus wasn’t talking about physical sight, but something deeper: the intention of the heart.

When your “eyes” are healthy—that is, when you choose to look at what is good, right, and uplifting—your life fills with light. There is peace, clarity, direction. Not because everything is perfect, but because inside, there is order.

But when your eyes are filled with darkness… when you get used to looking at negativity, impurity, or things that harm you… that also enters. And without realizing it, it begins to affect the way you think, feel, and react.

It’s like a house.

If you open the windows and let the light in… everything becomes clear.
But if you keep them shut… darkness doesn’t need effort to stay.

Sometimes we think that what we watch “doesn’t really matter.”
But it does.

It matters what you look at on your phone.
It matters what you consume every day.
It matters where you choose to focus your eyes… because that goes straight into your inner life.

And here’s the strong part…
Jesus is not condemning—He is warning.

He’s telling us: be careful what you allow in, because it will shape your life.

This isn’t about living in fear… it’s about living with intention.

Choosing to see what brings you closer to God.
Choosing to step away from what dims your soul.
Choosing to fill your life with light, little by little.

Let me leave you with this thought…
What you’re looking at today… is it filling you with light or darkness?

I invite you to join me in this prayer:

Lord, help me guard what I see and what I allow into my life.
Cleanse my thoughts and intentions, and teach me to choose what builds me up.
Give me discernment to turn away from what distances me from You,
and fill me with Your light, so I can live with peace and clarity each day.
In the name of Jesus, amen.
