If your life isn’t changing anything… maybe you haven’t fully understood what Jesus meant.
When Jesus talked about salt, He wasn’t just referring to something that adds flavor. In His time, salt was used to preserve food, to keep it from spoiling. It slowed down decay.
That’s why when He said, “you are the salt of the earth,” He was saying something deep: your life should influence, preserve what is good, and hold back what is wrong where you are. Not by force… but by the way you live.
But He also gave a warning: if the salt loses its taste… it’s no longer good.
It’s strong, but real. A faith that doesn’t transform… a life that doesn’t impact… ends up losing its purpose.
Then He talked about light.
Light doesn’t fight darkness… it doesn’t argue, it doesn’t force itself… it simply appears, and darkness disappears.
That’s how your life should be.
It’s not just about talking about God… it’s about living in a way that makes Him visible.
Your patience when others lose control.
Your forgiveness when others hold grudges.
Your peace when everything is falling apart.
That shines more than a thousand words.
But Jesus was clear: no one lights a lamp to hide it.
Believing and hiding it… is like turning off what God lit in you.
And here’s the most important part: Jesus didn’t say “try to be salt” or “try to be light.”
He said: “you are.”
It’s identity, not an option.
So if you are salt but you’re not influencing…
if you are light but you’re not shining…
it’s not lack of faith… it’s lack of closeness.
Because when someone is close to God… it shows.
They don’t have to force it… it reflects.
Salt works when it mixes.
Light works when it is exposed.
You can’t be salt by isolating yourself… nor light by hiding.
Jesus didn’t call you to run from the world… He called you to impact it.
Maybe not crowds… but someone close to you.
Your family, your children, your friends, your workplace.
Before we finish, think about this honestly:
Is your life making a real difference in someone else?
If not… don’t condemn yourself.
Just come back closer to God.
Because when you are close to Him… you will naturally bring flavor… and you will naturally shine.
Let me leave you with this final reflection…
it’s not about how many words you say… but how much light you reflect and how much “flavor” you leave in the lives of others.
