There are phrases in the Bible that, when you read them slowly, carry weight… not because they’re hard to understand, but because they feel so real. This is one of them.
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”
Hosea 4:6
When God said this through the prophet Hosea, He wasn’t talking about people being uneducated or lacking intelligence. This was something deeper… it was a matter of the heart.
The context of that time is clear: the people of Israel knew God. They had received His law, they had seen His hand move… but little by little, they stopped taking Him seriously. They began to live as if God didn’t matter. They mixed their faith with other beliefs, followed what felt good, what was convenient, what everyone else was doing.
And that’s the key: it wasn’t that they didn’t have access to knowledge… they rejected it.
Before this verse, God describes a land full of lies, violence, and injustice. Afterward, He makes it clear that even the spiritual leaders failed, because instead of guiding the people back to Him, they also turned away. Everything was disconnected from the truth.
So when God says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge,” what He’s really saying is something powerful:
“They were lost because they stopped truly knowing Me… and stopped living according to that knowledge.”
And if we’re honest… this isn’t far from what we see today.
Today we have more access to the Bible than ever before. It’s on our phones, in videos, on social media, in audio… but that doesn’t mean we truly know God.
Because knowing is not just reading a verse.
It’s not just listening to sermons.
It’s not just saying, “I believe in God.”
To know God is to understand His heart… and choose to live according to Him.
And this is where it becomes personal.
How many times do we know what’s right… but don’t do it?
How many times do we hear the Word… but don’t apply it?
How many times do we choose what’s easy… instead of what’s right?
That’s where the real “lack of knowledge” begins.
It’s not a lack of information… it’s a lack of transformation.
So what should we do today?
Maybe it’s not about doing more… but about going back to the basics, truly:
Return to reading the Word with intention, not just routine.
Seek to understand, not just to finish a chapter.
Ask yourself: “What is God telling me here?”
And most importantly… start living it, even when it’s hard.
Because in the end, the knowledge that transforms isn’t the one that stays in your mind… it’s the one that reaches your heart and shows up in your daily life.
Take a moment to reflect on this…
God doesn’t just want us to know about Him… He wants us to truly know Him.
And that kind of knowledge isn’t built in one day… it’s built every single day.
I invite you to pray with me…
Lord, help me not to live only on words.
Teach me to truly know You, not just hear about You.
Give me a heart willing to obey, even when it’s not easy.
Let Your Word not pass through my life without leaving a mark.
And help me draw closer to You every day, sincerely.
Amen.
