When Death No Longer Had the Last Word.

Stop for a moment… because what you are about to read is not small, nor symbolic, nor easy to explain. It is one of those moments in the Bible that, if you think about it, shakes you to the core.

While Jesus was on the cross, suffering, giving His life… something began to happen that almost no one expected. The sky grew dark. The earth shook. The veil of the temple was torn.

And then, something happens that we often read over quickly… but it is actually impressive:

“The tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.” (Matthew 27:52-53)

Think about it. People who had already died… who had been mourned… who had been buried… came back to life. And it wasn’t a secret. It wasn’t hidden. They entered the city… and many saw them.

This wasn’t just another detail in the story. It was a clear, powerful sign… almost as if God were saying: “Death no longer rules here.”

Because what was happening on the cross wasn’t just the suffering of a man… it was the beginning of the end for death. Jesus didn’t just come to teach us how to live better… He came to defeat what we fear most: the end.

The most interesting part is the order. The text says the tombs opened when He died… but they came out after His resurrection. As if everything depended on Him. As if He were the first… and then everyone else.

This leads to an inevitable question: Why did this happen? It wasn’t an isolated or symbolic event; it was a direct manifestation of God’s power at the moment Jesus was conquering sin and death. The Bible connects it: “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.” (1 Corinthians 15:22-23).

Those open graves were a visible sign that something eternal had changed. Jesus was opening the way, and behind Him, life began to conquer death. It wasn’t the end of a story… it was the beginning of a new reality.

In simple terms: it wasn’t all the dead, but “many” believers; they weren’t spirits, but real people who were seen. It was a unique sign that death began to lose its power from that very moment.

And that has a deep message for us today. Because there are things in our lives that feel like graves:

  • Relationships we’ve given up on.
  • Dreams we buried long ago.
  • Stages we thought would never return.
  • Hope that has flickered out.

Without realizing it, we live as if all of that is sealed forever. But this passage reminds us of something hard to believe, yet true: God doesn’t just open physical graves… He also opens the ones we carry inside.

What you think is over… what you’ve given up for lost… what you buried in pain… is not always dead to God. Sometimes, the only thing missing is the moment of resurrection.

Just as those tombs opened, God can open paths where you no longer see a way out. Just as those people walked again, there are areas of your life that can live again. Not by your strength, but because Jesus defeated death. When He won, He changed the rules.

Everything no longer ends in the grave.

I leave you with this reflection: What part of your life have you given up for dead too soon? Perhaps today you don’t need more effort… you need to believe that God can still do something there.

A Prayer

Lord, There are things in my life I’ve already given up for lost… situations I buried because they hurt too much. But today I understand that for You, nothing is completely dead. Just as You opened tombs that day, open what is closed inside of me. Give me back my hope… restore what I thought was lost… and teach me to trust that with You, there is always life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

We are Christians, connecting hearts with Christ.
