There are phrases from Jesus that don’t just teach… they make us uncomfortable.
And this is one of them.
Because if we’re honest, we’re all trying to “win at life.”
We work, we strive, we plan… we want stability, we want peace, we want things to go well. That doesn’t sound wrong… it sounds logical.
But then Jesus comes and says something that seems to break that logic:
“Whoever wants to save their life will lose it…”
And you stop and think… what does that even mean?
Over time, I’ve realized something…
Jesus wasn’t talking about the life everyone sees, but the life only you truly know.
That life where you carry things no one else sees:
anxiety about the future,
guilt from the past,
decisions that weigh on you,
fears you never say out loud.
That life you’re trying to hold together with your own strength.
Because even if we don’t say it like this, many of us are trying to save our life in our own way:
controlling everything,
avoiding pain,
protecting our image,
doing whatever it takes “not to lose.”
But there’s a problem…
living like that is exhausting.
It’s exhausting to pretend everything is fine.
It’s exhausting trying to control what’s not in your hands.
It’s exhausting carrying everything without letting anything go.
And little by little, without even noticing… we begin to lose ourselves.
We lose peace trying to gain security.
We lose authenticity trying to please others.
We lose purpose chasing comfort.
And that’s exactly what Jesus was pointing out.
He didn’t come to tell you, “stop trying.”
He came to tell you, “stop carrying it alone.”
When He talks about “losing your life,” He’s talking about surrender… but not as defeat, rather as rest.
It’s that moment when you say:
“I can’t keep living like this… I need something different.”
And that’s more common than we think.
There are people who seem to have everything together on the outside…
but inside, they’re broken.
And there are others who, when they surrendered their life to God, everything didn’t suddenly become perfect…
but something changed deeply: they were no longer alone.
Because when you place your life in God’s hands, you don’t lose…
you realign.
You stop being the center of everything…
and you begin to live from a purpose greater than yourself.
You start making decisions not just by impulse, but with direction.
You begin to have peace even when you don’t understand everything.
You start letting go of things that once controlled you.
And this is where Jesus’ words finally make sense:
the one who tries to save their life (their own way)… ends up losing it.
But the one who surrenders it (to God)… finds it.
This is not theory… it’s real life.
Maybe today you don’t need to do more…
maybe you need to let go of something.
A burden.
A fear.
A control that doesn’t belong to you.
Let me leave you with this thought to reflect on:
maybe you’re not losing when you let go…
maybe you’re finally starting to live.
And if you feel identified with this today, if you’re tired on the inside even though you keep going on the outside…
don’t ignore it.
I invite you to join me in this prayer:
Lord,
I’ve been trying to hold my life together with my own strength…
and I’m tired.
It’s hard for me to let go of control,
it’s hard for me to trust,
it’s hard for me to release what gives me “security”… even though I know it doesn’t give me peace.
Today I choose to surrender to You,
not as defeat, but as rest.
Take my life,
my decisions,
my burdens…
and teach me how to truly live.
In Jesus’ name,
amen.
