Stay until the end, because maybe today you’ll realize why you’ve been feeling restless… even though everything around you seems normal.
Have you ever felt like God called you to something… and your first instinct was to run the other way?
You’re not alone.
Jonah did it first.
There was a man who received a clear mission. It wasn’t hard to understand. There was no confusion. God spoke directly to him:
“Go to Nineveh.”
And Jonah bought a ticket… going the opposite direction.
Not because he didn’t hear God.
But precisely because he did.
That is the Jonah Syndrome.
It’s not unbelief.
It’s fear disguised as excuses.
It’s knowing exactly what you’re supposed to do… and doing everything possible to avoid it.
“I’m not ready.”
“That’s not for me.”
“There are people more capable.”
“Maybe later, when life is better.”
Sound familiar?
Jonah didn’t run because God was unfair.
He ran because obedience would cost him something.
It would cost him comfort.
It would force him to go where he didn’t want to go.
It would require him to love people he didn’t think deserved love.
And how many times do we do the same thing?
God places an idea in your heart.
A calling.
An open door.
And instead of walking toward it, we start building reasons not to move.
But here’s what impacts me most about this story:
The storm did not come to destroy Jonah.
It came to redirect him.
Sometimes the crises in our lives are not punishments.
They are course corrections.
They are the hand of God saying:
“That’s not the way. Come back.”
The belly of the great fish was not a grave.
It was a place of reflection.
A forced silence where Jonah could finally hear again.
And in that dark place, in that uncomfortable season, Jonah prayed.
And God listened.
Three days later, Jonah came out.
And this time… he went to Nineveh.
Maybe today you are inside the belly of something.
A difficult process.
A season you don’t understand.
A situation where everything feels closed off and hopeless.
But what if this is not the end of your story?
What if it’s the turning point?
What if God is waiting for you on the other side of the obedience you’ve been postponing?
The Bible says in Jonah 1:3 that he “fled to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.”
But in chapter 3, it says:
“Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord.”
Same man.
Same calling.
Different decision.
You can change direction too.
You do not have to arrive perfect.
You do not need to have everything figured out.
Jonah arrived in Nineveh smelling like fish…
and still, an entire city was transformed.
God does not need you to be ready.
He needs you to be willing.
Would you say yes to God today?
Not the easy yes.
The yes that costs something.
The yes that scares you.
The yes that changes everything.
Let’s pray together:
Lord, today I recognize that I have been running. I have been afraid. I have made excuses. But here I am. I may not feel ready, but I want to be willing. Lead me where You are calling me. Help me say yes even when my voice shakes. I trust You. Amen.
