The blood and water from Jesus’ side: what His sacrifice truly represents.

Stay here for a moment… because this is rarely talked about, but it is deeply revealing.

Everything had already ended.

Jesus had given up His spirit. Silence began to cover the scene. Some were leaving… others simply stood there, not fully understanding what they had just witnessed.

But then something happens that many read quickly… and move past.

A Roman soldier, to make sure Jesus was truly dead, took a spear and pierced His side.

And the Bible says something very specific:

“But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.” (John 19:34)

Blood… and water.

This is not just any detail.

It’s not something John wrote by accident.

In fact, he pauses to say this matters, that it is true, that he saw it himself (John 19:35). As if he wanted to make sure we wouldn’t ignore it.

Because in that moment… there is something deeper than just a wound.

The blood speaks of sacrifice.

From the beginning, the Bible teaches that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Blood represents the price, the life given, the full payment for sin.

Jesus did not die symbolically.

He poured out His blood… completely.

But the water…

The water speaks of cleansing, of new life, of restoration.

Jesus Himself said:
“Whoever believes in Me… out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38)

So in that final moment… when His body was already lifeless…

blood… and water came out.

As if God were saying:
“His sacrifice not only pays for your sin… it also cleanses your life.”

“This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood.” (1 John 5:6)

Not just forgiveness… but transformation.

Not just dying for you… but giving you a new life.

And there’s something else that stands out.

That open side…

is like a doorway.

From there came everything we needed.

Not from a throne… not from heaven…

but from a wound.

Sometimes we think God only works through greatness… but here we see He also works through pain.

Through surrender.

Through a wound opened by love.

And if you think about it…

that spear, which seemed like an act of violence…

ended up revealing something eternal.

It confirmed that Jesus truly died.

But it also showed that His work was complete.

Nothing was missing.

Nothing was left undone.

It was a total sacrifice.

So when you come to Christ…

you are not coming to someone who did “just enough.”

You are coming to someone who gave EVERYTHING.

His blood… to forgive you.

His water… to cleanse you and give you a new life.

There is no area of your life He cannot restore.

There is no guilt His blood cannot cover.

There is no past His grace cannot wash clean.

Take this reflection and hold it quietly in your heart…

Jesus did not die halfway.

His love is not halfway either.

I invite you, right where you are, to close your eyes for a moment and pray this simple prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You because Your sacrifice was complete.
Thank You for Your blood that forgives me…
and for Your water that cleanses me.
Today I don’t just want to believe in You… I want to live a new life in You.
Touch the deepest part of my heart…
and do in me what only You can do.
Amen.
