How to Draw Closer to God Step by Step.

Sometimes what the heart needs most is not to keep running… but to stop and return to God.

There are people who believe in God, but still feel far from Him. Not because they hate Him. Not because they don’t care. But because life slowly filled up with noise, problems, exhaustion, sin, disappointments, doubts, and wounds… and little by little, something inside them faded.

Deep down, they want to get closer to God, but they don’t know where to begin.

They want peace, direction, rest… but something inside tells them they’re not worthy anymore, that they’ve failed too much, that maybe God doesn’t want them the same way anymore.

But that’s not the truth.

The truth is that God does not move away from us. Many times, we are the ones who step back out of shame, guilt, or exhaustion. And even then… He keeps calling. He keeps waiting. He keeps reaching out.

But here’s something important many people overlook…

It’s not just about “getting closer to God” in a general sense.
The true way to approach God has a name:

Jesus Christ

And that changes everything.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6

That’s why, before anything else, there is a foundation that holds everything together:

Recognizing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

It’s not just saying “I believe in God.” It’s recognizing that you need Christ. That He died for your sins. That He rose again. And that you are willing to surrender your life to Him.

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Romans 10:9

This is where everything begins.

You don’t start by trying to get close to see if God will accept you…
You start because, through Christ, God has already opened the door to receive you.

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
James 4:8

So… how do you draw closer to God step by step?

The first step is recognizing your need for God.

It sounds simple, but not everyone gets there. Many people want peace without God, direction without God, purpose without God. But the human soul was created for Him.

You can fill your life with many things… but there is a space only God can fill.

Drawing closer to God begins when you stop pretending you can do it all on your own.

When you realize your strength is not enough.
Your intelligence is not enough.
Your money is not enough.
You need God.

That moment doesn’t make you weak… it makes you real.

The second step is talking to God just as you are.

Many people don’t pray because they think they need the right words or a special way of speaking. But real prayer doesn’t start with perfect words… it starts with an honest heart.

You can say: “Lord, I don’t even know how to start.”
You can say: “I’m tired.”
You can say: “Help me.”

God listens to sincere prayers.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”
Psalm 34:18

Your pain is not a barrier… many times it’s the meeting point.

The third step is true repentance.

It’s not just feeling guilty. It’s recognizing your sin, asking for forgiveness, and choosing to change direction.

You cannot draw close to God while holding on to what pulls you away from Him.

Pride.
Bitterness.
Double living.
Habits you already know are hurting you.

God is not asking for perfection… but He is asking for a willing heart.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us.”
1 John 1:9

God doesn’t just forgive… He cleanses.

The fourth step is to begin reading God’s Word.

You cannot truly know God if you don’t listen to Him. And His clearest voice is found in the Bible.

Start simple. Not out of obligation, but with intention. Read to understand, to receive.

Ask yourself:
What is God showing me here?
What needs to change in me?
What promise is here for me?

“Your word is a lamp to my feet.”
Psalm 119:105

You may not see the whole path… but you will see the next step.

The fifth step is seeking God consistently.

Not only when you feel bad. Not only when you feel like it.

Your relationship with God is not built only on emotions… it is built on decision.

There will be days when you feel a lot.
And days when you feel nothing.

But God is still there.

Drawing close to Him daily—even in small ways—begins to change your heart over time.

The sixth step is surrounding yourself with people who bring you closer to God.

Faith doesn’t grow well in isolation. You need healthy community, truth, and people who build you up.

People who don’t just make you laugh… but help you grow.

Find a church where the truth is taught.
Find friendships that strengthen your spiritual life.

The seventh step is obeying what God has already shown you.

Many people ask for direction… but ignore what they already know.

If you know you need to forgive… do it.
If you know you need to change something… do it.
If you know you need to seek God more… start today.

“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.”
John 14:21

Closeness with God grows through obedience.

And something important…

Drawing closer to God doesn’t mean everything will be easy.
It means you won’t be alone anymore.

There will still be struggles.
Difficult days.
Moments of weakness.

But now there is a presence with you.
There is direction.
There is peace.
There is purpose.

And if you fail at some point… come back.

If you grow cold… come back.
If you stumble… come back.
If you get distracted… come back.

God is not looking for perfection… He is looking for a sincere heart.

Let me leave you with something clear: drawing closer to God is not losing… it’s finding.

Finding peace.
Finding direction.
Finding forgiveness.
Finding purpose.
But above all… finding Christ.

I invite you to join me in this prayer.

Lord, today I recognize that I need You. I recognize that I cannot do this on my own, and that I need Jesus Christ in my life. I believe that He died for my sins and rose again, and today I receive Him as my Lord and Savior. Forgive me, cleanse me, and change me from within. Teach me to draw closer to You each day, to seek You sincerely, to obey You, and to walk with You. Remove everything in me that pulls me away from Your presence and fill me with Your peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
