A Little Bird Told Me

Have you ever had someone know something you were sure nobody else knew?

You said it in private. You thought it quietly. You mentioned it to just one person. And suddenly, everyone seems to know.

Then someone smiles and says:

—A little bird told me.

Interestingly, that popular expression has a very ancient origin. It appears in the Bible.

In Ecclesiastes 10:20 we read:

“For a bird of the air may carry your voice, and a bird on the wing may report what you say.”

Solomon was not talking about literal messenger birds. He was teaching a truth that is just as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago: words have consequences, and they often travel much farther than we imagine.

We live in a time when people think they can speak carelessly. We make comments about someone. We spread a rumor. We criticize a person when they are not present. We send a message thinking nobody else will ever see it.

But words have wings.

Sometimes they fly through other people.

Sometimes through an unexpected conversation.

Sometimes through a screenshot.

And sometimes simply because God allows what was hidden to come into the light.

That is why Solomon encourages us to be careful with what comes out of our mouths and even with what we keep in our hearts.

Because this is not merely about avoiding being found out.

It is about living in such a way that we do not have to worry if our words become known.

A good question to ask ourselves today is this:

If every word I have spoken this week were heard by everyone, would I be proud of them?

Jesus taught something very similar when He said that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Our words reveal what is inside us.

That is why the solution is not simply to speak less. The solution is to allow God to transform our hearts.

When the heart changes, the words change too.

Then we stop sowing rumors, criticism, and hurt, and begin sowing encouragement, truth, and hope.

The next time you hear the phrase, “A little bird told me,” remember this lesson.

Words have wings.

And sooner or later, they usually travel much farther than we ever imagined.

I invite you to join me in this prayer.

Lord, help me guard my words and my thoughts. May everything that comes out of my mouth honor Your name and build up those around me. Examine my heart and transform anything that does not please You. Give me wisdom to speak and discernment to remain silent when necessary. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
