“But aren’t you a Christian?” You have probably heard that phrase more than once. It usually comes right when you are trying to set a boundary, when you want to say no, when you simply cannot keep giving anymore. And suddenly, your faith is used against you, as if being a Christian meant you were obligated to say yes to everything.
Let’s be honest. Many times, believers end up being first on the list when someone is looking for someone to take advantage of. Why? Because they know you have a good heart. They know you forgive, you help, you don’t make a scene, and you feel bad saying no. And some people take all of that, not as something beautiful to respect, but as an open door to abuse.
They use your name for debts. They leave you the work nobody else wants to do because you never complain. They ask you for money again and again without thinking about paying it back. They only call you when they need something, and they disappear when you are the one in need. And if you ever dare to put a stop to it, they remind you of your faith. Christians forgive. Christians don’t get angry. Christians always help.
But listen carefully to this. Being a Christian does not mean being foolish. It means being wise.
Jesus knew this perfectly well. He knew His followers would walk among people who would confuse their kindness with weakness. That is why, before sending them into the world, He did not tell them to let themselves be used. He said: I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. This was written in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter ten.
Notice that Jesus Himself commands us to be wise. His words were not careless. He wants you to keep your eyes open. Being wise as a serpent in your daily life means realizing when someone only comes to you out of interest. It means not lending what you cannot afford to lose. It means saying no without feeling guilty. It means not signing what you do not understand. It means protecting your home, your family, and your peace. That does not contradict your faith. It is part of the wisdom God Himself asks of you.
And at the same time, He asks you to be innocent as a dove. That means that even when you set a boundary, you do it without hatred. That you step away from those who hurt you without wishing them harm. That you keep a clean heart even when the world tries to stain it. Meekness is not letting people walk all over you. It is having strength without losing tenderness.
Look at the balance Jesus teaches. He did not make you cold or calculating, but He also did not leave you defenseless. You can say no and still love. You can protect yourself and still be a good person. You can deny someone a favor and still pray for them. Being a Christian does not mean having no boundaries. It means knowing how to set boundaries without losing your heart.
Maybe today there is someone who has worn you down. Someone who abuses your kindness and hides behind your faith to keep doing it. God is not asking you to keep enduring in silence. He is giving you permission to be wise. He is teaching you to protect yourself without stopping loving, to bring order without holding resentment.
I leave you with this final reflection to meditate on. God did not make you good so people could use you. He made you wise so you could know how to love without destroying yourself. Your kindness is a gift from heaven, not permission for others to walk all over you.
If this touched your heart, write Amen, and let us pray together.
Lord, thank You because You know every person who has tried to take advantage of my kindness. You see when they use my faith to pressure me. Give me wisdom so I will not be deceived, and meekness so I will not be filled with resentment. Teach me to set boundaries without losing my heart, to say no without guilt, and to keep loving without becoming naive. May my kindness never become a door to abuse, but the reflection of Your wisdom in me. In the name of Jesus, amen.
