Sometimes we read a verse so often… that we stop truly understanding it.
“Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you” sounds beautiful. It sounds like a promise. But if we’re honest… it can also feel a little confusing.
Because we think:
“So if I seek God, He’s going to give me money, a house, success?”
And that’s where many people get it wrong.
Let’s slow down… because Jesus was not talking about what many assume.
This verse is in Matthew 6:33, but it doesn’t start there. Jesus had been talking about something very specific: anxiety.
Before saying that phrase, He says:
“Do not worry about your life… what you will eat or what you will wear…”
And He gives simple examples: the birds of the air, the lilies of the field.
Jesus was addressing something very human…
people living in constant fear, worried about tomorrow, carrying a burden they couldn’t control.
And right in the middle of that, He says:
“Seek first the kingdom of God…”
In other words… He wasn’t giving a formula to become rich.
He was giving a direction to live in peace.
When Jesus talks about the “kingdom of God,” He’s not referring to a physical place.
He’s talking about God’s rule in your life.
That means:
God becomes your true priority
His will is above yours
You live according to what He wants, not just what you feel
And then He says something that changes everything:
“and His righteousness…”
This is key.
He doesn’t say “seek blessings”…
He says seek to live rightly before God.
Seek a life that is sincere, aligned with Him.
Now comes the important part:
“and all these things will be added to you”
What does “all these things” mean?
Go back to the context:
food, clothing, daily needs… what is necessary to live.
Jesus is not promising luxury.
He is promising care.
He’s not saying:
“follow me and I’ll make you rich”
He’s saying:
“trust me and you won’t lack what you truly need”
And that completely changes the meaning.
Because many of us live the opposite way…
First we seek:
stability
money
security
control
And if there’s time left… we seek God.
Jesus says:
reverse the order
First God.
First His will.
First living rightly.
And the rest… won’t be your burden.
It doesn’t mean there won’t be problems.
It doesn’t mean everything will be easy.
It means you won’t live with the same anxiety anymore… because you’ll know who is in control.
And this is where it becomes personal…
You can pray, read the Bible, go to church…
and still live worried, afraid, trying to fix everything on your own.
That’s not seeking first the kingdom.
Seeking the kingdom means letting go of control… even when it’s hard.
It means trusting… even when you don’t see clearly.
It means obeying… even when it’s not convenient.
It’s telling God:
“Lord, before anything else… I choose You.”
And that… is not easy.
But that’s where everything begins to change inside.
Let me leave you with this reflection:
Maybe you’re not wrong for worrying…
you’re human.
But it may be that you’re carrying something that was never yours to carry.
Jesus didn’t ask you to solve life.
He asked you to trust Him.
And when that happens…
problems don’t disappear…
but they no longer control you.
I invite you to pray this, simply:
Lord, sometimes I worry more than I should.
I try to control everything… and I end up tired.
Today I choose to give You my burdens.
Teach me to truly seek You first, not just with words.
Help me trust that You know what I need… even before I understand it.
Order my life, my priorities, and my heart.
And help me live in Your peace.
Amen.
