They Profess to Know God, but by Their Actions They Deny Him

There are people who say they know God… but their lives tell a different story.

Maybe you know someone like that. They talk about faith, share Bible verses, and raise their hands during worship. But when they walk out the door, they treat others poorly, hold on to bitterness, and lie without a second thought. And if we’re honest, perhaps at some point in our lives, that person was us.

These powerful words were written by a man named Paul, one of the people who loved Christ the most, in a letter he sent to a young man named Titus. In the first chapter of that letter, Paul described certain people with very direct words: “They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.” They were people who constantly talked about God, but whose way of living completely contradicted Him. They said one thing and did another. And that, more than anything else, deeply grieved the heart of God.

Because God has never been impressed by what we say. He cares about how we live.

It is easy to say, “I believe in God.” The difficult part is proving it when no one is watching. When we have the opportunity to repay evil with evil, yet choose to forgive. When we could stay silent in the face of injustice, yet decide to speak up. When no one will applaud us for doing what is right, and we do it anyway.

Jesus said it very simply: “You will know them by their fruits.” Not by their beautiful words. Not by how much they know about the Bible. By their fruits. By the way they love, treat others, and live.

And here is the good news: this verse was not written to condemn you, but to awaken you. God is not looking for perfect people. He is looking for sincere hearts. Hearts that, when they realize their lives do not reflect what they claim to believe, do not hide… but instead draw near to Him and say, “Lord, help me truly live what I say I believe.”

Perhaps today you feel that your faith has remained only in words. That you pray, but do not change. That you know God by name, but still need to know Him in your heart. Do not be discouraged. Recognizing it is already the first step. And God always welcomes those who return to Him.

Let me leave you with this final thought: what speaks the loudest about your faith is not what you post or what you say… it is how you live when no one is watching. May your life speak of God even before you open your mouth.

If this touched your heart, let us pray together:

Lord, I do not want to be someone who knows You only with my lips. I want to know You truly, through my life, my actions, and the way I treat others. Forgive me when my words and my way of living have not matched. Transform my heart and help me reflect You in everything I do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
