What Did Jesus Mean by “I Am”?

Jesus spoke just two words, and suddenly everyone there wanted to kill Him.

He was arguing with the religious leaders. They were proud of being descendants of Abraham, the great father of the faith. And in the middle of that conversation, Jesus said something no one expected: “Before Abraham was born, I am.”

Pay close attention. He did not say, “I was.” He did not say, “I existed.” He said, “I am,” in the present tense, as if time itself had no power over Him.

And those who heard Him understood exactly what He was saying. That is why they picked up stones to kill Him. Because “I Am” was not just an ordinary phrase. It was the name God Himself had used when He revealed Himself to Moses centuries earlier, saying, “I AM WHO I AM.” At that moment, Jesus was not giving a history lesson. He was revealing who He truly is. He was declaring, without hesitation, that He is the eternal God, the One who has no beginning and no end, the One who existed before Abraham, before time, before everything.

And here is what you need to hear today.

Many times, we think of God as someone who was present in the past, in the stories of the Bible, or in the lives of other people. Or we imagine Him in some distant future, when everything is finally fixed. Yet we often feel that He is absent right where we need Him most: in our present, in this difficult day, in this waiting that seems to have no end.

But Jesus did not say, “I was.” He said, “I am.”

That means He is not just a memory or a promise. He is. Right now. In your today. In the middle of your exhaustion, your doubts, and those nights that seem endless. The same One who existed before Abraham is with you at this very moment, even if you cannot feel Him.

You do not have to travel into the past to find Him. You do not have to wait for the future for Him to appear. He is already here, quietly telling you: “I am. I am here. You are not alone.”

Perhaps you have been carrying your burdens by yourself for far too long, believing that God has forgotten you. But the eternal God knows your name, and He knows your struggle. Today, He wants to remind you that He has never stopped being present in your life.

Today, you do not need to feel that God is coming back. You only need to believe that He never left. He is still the same “I Am” He has always been, and He is with you right here, in this very moment you are living.

If you feel you need Him, close your eyes for a moment and speak to Him simply. You do not need perfect words—just a sincere heart. Maybe it has been a long time since you prayed like that, and perhaps this is the moment. You can make this prayer your own:

“Lord Jesus, today I acknowledge that You are the I Am, the eternal God who existed before all things and who is still here with me. Thank You because You are not just a memory or a distant promise, but a real presence in my life today. I give You my burdens, my fears, and my weariness. Help me believe that I am never alone, because You are with me today. Amen.”
