A few days ago, two journalists were arrested after covering a protest that took place inside a Christian church. The situation began because one of the pastors of that congregation also works for ICE. Those are the basic facts. What followed, however, left a bitter impression on many people, both inside and outside the faith.

To better understand what happened, it is important to look at the full context. On January 18, 2026, during a Sunday worship service at Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, a group of protesters interrupted the service to demonstrate against federal immigration policies and against the involvement of a pastor from that church in work related to ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement). The pastor identified in the reports was David Easterwood, who, in addition to his pastoral role, holds an administrative position within the regional ICE office.

During the protest, demonstrators entered the sanctuary, shouted anti-ICE slogans, and publicly demanded that the pastor resign. The disruption lasted several minutes, after which the service was suspended. Church leaders later requested intervention from authorities, arguing that the congregation’s right to freely practice their faith had been violated.

Days after the incident, the U.S. Department of Justice filed federal charges related to the disruption of the worship service. Among those charged were Don Lemon, a journalist and former CNN anchor, and Georgia Fort, an independent journalist based in Minnesota, both of whom were present at the church to cover the event. Both journalists maintain that they were acting in a professional capacity protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Don Lemon was arrested on January 29, 2026, in Los Angeles, California, while Georgia Fort was arrested the following day in Minnesota. Both were later released without bond. The case remains ongoing.

According to the federal indictment—which reflects the government’s allegations, not a conviction—the journalists face two primary charges. The first is conspiracy to deprive civil rights (18 U.S.C. § 241), based on the claim that they acted in coordination with others to intimidate or interfere with congregants exercising their constitutional right to worship. The second charge is interference with the free exercise of religion at a place of worship, under the FACE Act (18 U.S.C. § 248), a federal law designed to protect individuals from interference during religious services. Prosecutors argue that the journalists’ presence and conduct inside the church contributed to the disruption; the defense rejects this claim and insists their actions were strictly journalistic. At this time, no verdict has been reached, and the journalists are fully entitled to the presumption of innocence.

This is where a serious legal tension emerges. On one hand, federal law protects the right of people to worship without disruption or intimidation. On the other hand, the Constitution strongly protects freedom of the press, including the right of journalists to document matters of public interest. The key distinction is not the location, but the conduct.

In this case, the journalists were not protesters. They did not lead chants, disrupt the service, or encourage others to do so. Their role was to observe and document what was happening. Laws protecting religious worship are meant to address active interference, while press protections cover passive documentation. Being present to report, by itself, is not the same as disrupting a service.

When focusing strictly on the journalists’ conduct, the legal balance leans toward press freedom. Treating reporters as offenders simply for covering an event inside a church raises serious concerns—not only for journalism, but for public transparency in any space considered legally protected.

This is not about dismissing the importance of law or encouraging disorder. Scripture itself calls us to respect authority. That is not in question. What is painful, and worth reflecting on, is the opportunity that was lost—an opportunity that was visible, significant, and perhaps placed there for a reason.

At a time when Christianity has been criticized, misunderstood, and in many cases devalued in the eyes of society, the church involved could have responded differently. It could have demonstrated love amid conflict, mercy amid tension, and wisdom amid noise. It could have offered a living testimony of what it means to follow Christ when no one is watching—and when everyone is watching.

Instead, charges were filed and journalists were arrested. For many outside the faith, the message received was not one of grace, but of rejection. Not compassion, but rigidity. As a result, some are not reflecting on Jesus, but distancing themselves further from the church and from Christianity as a whole.

Some may argue, from a strict position, that the church must be respected above all else because it belongs to God, or that failing to act would set a precedent for similar incidents elsewhere. Yet it is worth remembering that the church is God’s—but God has never been fragile, nor has He needed to be defended by force. What He has always asked is that His people represent Him well, especially in difficult moments.

It is also important to clarify something often misunderstood. When Jesus entered the temple and overturned the tables of the merchants, He was not defending a building or asserting control through force. He was confronting religious corruption, exploitation, and the distortion of a sacred space meant for prayer. His actions were driven by justice and zeal for God’s heart—not fear, control, or image management.

Jesus never protected the temple at the expense of compassion. When confronted, challenged, or questioned, He did not focus first on legal precedent, but on the people before Him. Fear of “what might happen next” was never the driving force of the Gospel. Love was.

Respecting the church does not mean sealing it off from the world. It means allowing it to be a place where the world encounters what it cannot find elsewhere: mercy, patience, truth, and grace. A church may be protected on the outside by law, yet weakened on the inside if its witness is lost.

So the deeper question remains: what image of Christianity are we allowing to be replicated? A faith driven by fear and control, or a faith so grounded that it can face conflict without losing love?

Jesus was never afraid of losing favor with the powerful if it meant revealing the Father’s heart. He touched the rejected, defended the accused before public judgment, and spoke truth wrapped in compassion. The Gospel is not defended with handcuffs or silence, but with lives that reflect Christ—even when it is uncomfortable.

Legally, everything may have been handled correctly. Spiritually, however, the question lingers: what did the world see that day? A church protecting its space, or a church opening its heart? A Christianity that withdraws, or one that steps forward to love?

This reflection is not meant to accuse, but to invite self-examination. Because when the world watches us, it is not looking for perfection—it is looking for consistency.

I invite you to join me in this prayer:
Lord, teach us not to miss the opportunities You place before us to reflect who You are. Give us humble, wise, and loving hearts, especially when situations are tense or unjust. May our decisions, beyond what is legal, always point to Your grace. Amen.

Somos Cristianos, connecting hearts with Christ.

Two journalists were arrested after covering a protest inside a Christian church in Minnesota.
