It seems like a strange question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even an unnecessary one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After all, Jesus was standing before a man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years. Thirty-eight years unable to walk. Thirty-eight years waiting for something to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So why would Jesus ask something so obvious?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Do you want to be healed?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course he wanted to be healed… or did he?<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is something that happens to some people who spend many years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the day finally comes for their release, some are actually afraid to leave. They have spent so much time behind bars that prison has become the only world they know. Outside there is freedom, but there are also responsibilities, decisions, and change. And even though no one wants to be imprisoned, some eventually feel safer inside the walls than outside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something similar can happen to the human heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The man at Bethesda had spent thirty-eight years living the same reality. Every morning he woke up in the same place. Every day he depended on others. Every day he watched someone else reach the pool before him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His condition was not only physical. It had become his way of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is why it is interesting that when Jesus asked him if he wanted to be healed, the man did not answer, “Yes, I do.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead, he began explaining his problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool…”<\/p>\n\n\n\n “While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me…”<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was as if Jesus asked a question, and the man responded with a list of reasons why nothing had changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps that is the real lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus was not asking whether he wanted his legs to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He was asking whether he was willing for his entire life to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because if he were healed, he would have to get up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He would have to walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He would have to leave behind the identity of being “the paralytic at Bethesda.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n He would have to begin an entirely new life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes we do exactly the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We say we want God to change a situation, but we become so accustomed to it that we end up living inside our excuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We want peace, but we keep feeding our anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We want restoration, but we cling to resentment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We want to move forward, but we keep looking backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We want freedom, but sometimes freedom frightens us because it requires change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is why Jesus’ question is still so powerful today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because He does not know our need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He already knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is whether we are willing to leave behind the things that have kept us paralyzed for so long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe today you are not lying beside the Pool of Bethesda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But perhaps you have spent years trapped in fear, a wound, guilt, worry, or a way of thinking that keeps you from moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And Jesus is still asking the same question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Do you want to be healed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Do you want to be free?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Do you want your life to change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because when that man finally obeyed the words of Jesus, the miracle happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He got up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He picked up his mat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And he walked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the same Jesus who transformed his life is still transforming lives today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I invite you to join me in this prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lord, You know the areas of my life where I have remained stuck for far too long. Help me leave behind excuses, fears, and everything that keeps me from moving forward. Give me the faith to obey Your voice and the courage to embrace the new life You have for me.
