You use it for a few minutes… and suddenly you lose it. That’s exactly what happened to a man in the Bible.

There was something that concerned a group of young men who were studying under the prophet Elisha.

The place where they lived was no longer large enough.

More and more people were coming to learn about God. One day they approached Elisha and said:

“The place where we live with you has become too small. Let us go to the Jordan River and build a larger place.”

I love this part of the story because they didn’t sit around waiting for everything to happen on its own.

They saw a need and decided to act.

They wanted to grow.

They wanted to move forward.

They wanted to build.

And they were willing to work for it.

However, there is one detail that many people overlook.

One of those men didn’t even own an axe.

He had to borrow one.

That tells us they were probably not wealthy people. Yet their lack of money did not stop them. They didn’t say, “We’ll start when we have more resources.” Nor did they say, “We can’t do it because we don’t have everything we need.”

They took what they had, asked for help when necessary, and got to work.

How many dreams remain buried because we wait for perfect conditions?

How many people stop serving God, starting a project, or pursuing a purpose because they feel they don’t have enough?

These men teach us that growth often begins with the little we already have in our hands.

The story goes on to say that while they were cutting trees near the Jordan River, an accident happened.

One of the men swung his axe, struck the tree, and suddenly the iron axe head flew off and fell into the water.

It disappeared into the river.

Then the man cried out:

“Oh, my master! It was borrowed!”

That reaction has always caught my attention.

He wasn’t upset because he had lost a tool.

He was upset because he had lost something that belonged to someone else.

He cared about keeping his word.

He cared about returning what had been entrusted to him.

He cared about not letting someone down.

That speaks of integrity.

Today we live in a world where many people think it’s normal not to return borrowed things, to break promises, or to be careless with what belongs to others.

But this man was different.

His heart was honest.

He knew he had a responsibility to return what had been entrusted to him.

And when the problem happened, he didn’t try to hide it.

He didn’t pretend nothing had happened.

He didn’t make excuses.

He ran to Elisha.

And that teaches us something very important.

Elisha was a prophet of God. This man knew that by himself he had no way of recovering the iron from the bottom of the river, but he also knew that he served a God for whom nothing is impossible.

That is why he went to Elisha.

Not because Elisha was a magician.

Not because he had special powers.

He went because he had faith that God could help him.

He knew the problem had slipped out of his hands, but not out of God’s hands.

How often do we do the opposite?

We try to solve everything on our own.

We worry.

We panic.

We fill ourselves with anxiety.

And only afterward do we seek God.

This man did the right thing. In the middle of his problem, he ran to someone who could point him to God.

Then Elisha asked him:

“Where did it fall?”

After that, Elisha cut a stick, threw it into the water, and something impossible happened.

The iron began to float.

What seemed lost reappeared.

Then Elisha said:

“Pick it up.”

And the man recovered what he had lost.

Sometimes we think this miracle is about an axe.

But in reality, it is about people who wanted to grow, who worked hard, who lived with integrity, and who had faith to seek God when problems arose.

Those are exactly the qualities God is still looking for today.

People who refuse to settle.

People who work.

People who are honest.

And people who know how to turn to God when their own strength is not enough.

Perhaps today God wants to remind you of something simple.

Don’t let a lack of resources stop you.

Don’t lose your integrity when things go wrong.

And never forget that what seems impossible for you is still possible for God.

In the end, that man had no money to replace the axe. He had no way to retrieve it from the bottom of the river. All he had was hard work, honesty, and faith.

And that was enough for God to do the rest.

Perhaps that is the most beautiful lesson in this story. Everything that is entrusted to us should be returned in the same condition or better. Our work, our responsibilities, the trust people place in us, and the opportunities God puts in our hands. And when something goes wrong, we should not hide it or make excuses. We should be honest enough to acknowledge it and have the faith to bring it before God, because what sinks beyond our reach is never too deep for Him.

I invite you to join me in this prayer:

Lord, give me a hardworking, honest, and faithful heart. Help me take good care of what You have entrusted to me and help me turn to You when I face problems I cannot solve on my own. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

SomosCristianos
Connecting hearts with Christ.

What would you do if you lost something that wasn’t yours?

The story of the lost axe isn’t really about an axe.
