There are moments in history when the heart of a Christian must stop, open the Bible, and ask with reverence before God: “Lord, what do You want me to think? What do You want me to do? What attitude do You expect from me?”

Wars have always shaken the world. Some are presented as necessary. Others as defense. Others as justice. Others as punishment. And many times, when there is pain, death, fear, and confusion, every nation tries to convince its people that God is on its side.

But a Christian cannot respond first as a citizen of a nation. A Christian must respond first as a disciple of Christ.

Jesus spoke about wars, but He did not speak about them as something His followers should celebrate. In Matthew 24:6, Jesus said:

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.”

Jesus did not deny that wars would happen. He also did not say that wars would be proof that one nation is holier than another. He said they would occur in a fallen world, broken by sin, ruled by human ambition, hatred, pride, injustice, and rebellion against God.

This is important: the fact that Jesus said wars would happen does not mean He commanded us to support them with enthusiasm.

One thing is to recognize a prophetic reality. Another very different thing is to bless violence as though it were God’s perfect desire.

Jesus came to reveal a different Kingdom. When Pilate questioned Him, Jesus answered in John 18:36:

“My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight…”

That statement is powerful. Jesus could have called armies of angels. He could have used military power. He could have destroyed His enemies. But He did not. His Kingdom does not advance through the sword, hatred, or revenge. His Kingdom advances through truth, justice, mercy, repentance, and love.

That is why, when Peter drew his sword to defend Jesus, the Lord told him in Matthew 26:52:

“Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.”

Peter thought he was defending the Son of God. But Jesus taught him that not everything that appears to defend God comes from the Spirit of God.

And here begins the difficult question: should a Christian support a war?

The most honest answer is this: a Christian should not love war, should not celebrate it, should not desire it, should not use it to feed hatred, and should not confuse the Kingdom of God with the interests of any nation.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:9:

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

He did not say, “Blessed are those who celebrate destruction.” He did not say, “Blessed are those who mock the enemy.” He did not say, “Blessed are those who desire more people to die.” He said, “Blessed are the peacemakers.”

That does not mean Christians should be naive. The Bible recognizes that real evil exists in the world. It recognizes that there are governments, authorities, injustices, and situations where the innocent need to be protected. Romans 13 teaches that civil authorities have a role in maintaining order and justice. But there is a difference between recognizing that governments have responsibilities and believing that the Church should become a cheerleader for war.

The State may speak about strategy.

But the Church must speak about truth, justice, mercy, and repentance.

The State may speak about borders.

But the Church must remember that every human life, from every nation, was created in the image of God.

The State may declare enemies.

But Jesus told us in Matthew 5:44:

“Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”

This is not easy. In fact, it is one of the most difficult teachings of Jesus. Because in times of war, the world wants us to hate. It wants us to dehumanize. It wants us to see the other side as monsters. But Jesus calls us to something higher: to love without approving evil, to pray without justifying injustice, and to seek peace without denying the truth.

A Christian may pray for protection. A Christian may pray for justice. A Christian may ask God to stop the wicked. A Christian may ask for wisdom for leaders. A Christian may weep with those who weep. A Christian may defend the innocent. But a Christian must guard the heart from becoming someone who enjoys the death of others.

Proverbs 24:17 says:

“Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth.”

Although that verse is found in the Old Testament, it reveals something about the character of God that we also see in Jesus. God is not pleased with a cruel heart.

Now, concerning Israel, we must also speak carefully. The Bible shows that God made covenants with Israel and that Israel has an important place in biblical history. But that does not mean that every political or military action of a modern government must automatically be approved by Christians without discernment.

Supporting the right of a people to exist and live in safety does not mean closing our eyes to the suffering of innocent people. Praying for Israel does not mean hating Palestinians. Praying for Palestinians does not mean hating Israel. Christians are not called to choose whom to love and whom to despise. We are called to love justice, hate evil, and pray for everyone.

First Timothy 2:1-2 tells us:

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority…”

The first reaction of a Christian toward war should not be applauding bombings or sharing posts filled with hatred. The first reaction should be to bend the knees.

Pray for leaders.

Pray for soldiers.

Pray for civilians.

Pray for children.

Pray for widows.

Pray for hostages.

Pray for the wounded.

Pray for enemies.

Pray that God will stop evil, expose lies, and bring true peace.

James 4:1 asks a very direct question:

“From whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?”

The Bible does not present war as something beautiful. It presents war as the fruit of a world where sin rules human hearts. Behind many wars there is pride, greed, fear, revenge, ambition, control, nationalistic idolatry, and the desire for power.

That is why Christians must be very careful when they begin to speak about war with too much certainty. It is very easy to say, “God is with us,” when the dead are far away. It is very easy to speak boldly when we are not the ones burying children. It is very easy to give opinions from behind a screen while others are under the rubble.

Jesus did not call us to be cold. He called us to be light.

And being light in times of war means refusing to be swept away by collective hatred. It means refusing to repeat lies simply because they benefit the side we prefer. It means refusing to use the Bible to justify cruelty. It means remembering that our deepest struggle is not against flesh and blood.

Ephesians 6:12 says:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world…”

This does not mean that there are no people responsible for evil actions. Of course there are. The Bible teaches moral responsibility. But it reminds us that behind human chaos there is also a spiritual battle. That is why Christians must not allow their hearts to be ruled by propaganda, fear, racism, revenge, or fanaticism.

So, what is the true Christian position toward war?

The Christian position is to stand on the side of Christ.

And to stand on the side of Christ means standing on the side of truth, even when it makes our own side uncomfortable.

Standing on the side of justice, even when it does not fit our politics.

Standing on the side of mercy, even when the world calls it weakness.

Standing on the side of peace, even when others want us to shout louder.

Standing on the side of the innocent, regardless of their nationality.

Standing on the side of prayer, not hatred.

Standing on the side of the Kingdom of God, not the idolatry of a nation.

Romans 12:17-18 says:

“Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”

The words “if it be possible” recognize that peace does not always depend on us. There are aggressors. There are injustices. There is violence that others begin. But “as much as lieth in you” reminds us that a Christian should never be a promoter of hatred, lies, or cruelty.

Perhaps one Christian, because of conscience, may serve in the military. Perhaps another Christian, also because of conscience, may decide not to take up arms. Sincere believers may differ on that point. But what should never exist in any disciple of Jesus is a heart that enjoys war, celebrates death, or mocks human suffering.

Because Christ died for sinners.

And many of those sinners lived in enemy nations.

The cross teaches us something the world does not understand: God did not defeat evil by imitating evil. Christ overcame by giving Himself in love, speaking the truth, forgiving, carrying sin, and rising again in power.

So when you see war, do not turn off your sensitivity. Do not allow your heart to become stone. Do not allow headlines to steal your compassion. Do not turn faith into a flag of hatred. Do not use the name of God to justify what Jesus would never celebrate.

Pray. Discern. Weep with those who weep. Ask for justice. Ask for peace. Ask for protection for the innocent. Ask for wisdom for leaders. Ask God to restrain evil. But above all, ask that your heart would not look like the world when the world is burning.

Because Jesus did not say, “Blessed are those who win wars.”

Jesus said:

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

Let me leave you with this reflection for the heart: perhaps the question is not only what we think about war, but what is happening inside us when we speak about it. If we lose compassion when we speak about war, something is growing dim in the soul. If, when innocent people die, we only think about sides, something needs to return to Christ. If our heart can no longer pray for the enemy, we need to sit once again at the feet of Jesus.

I invite you to join me in this prayer:

Lord Jesus, teach us to look at wars through Your eyes. Do not allow hatred to rule our hearts. Give us discernment so that we do not call evil good or good evil. Help us to love justice without losing mercy. We pray for the innocent, for children, for families, for soldiers, for leaders, and even for our enemies. Stop evil, bring truth where there are lies, comfort where there is pain, and peace where there is destruction. Make us peacemakers in a world filled with violence. Amen.

Somos Cristianos, connecting hearts with Christ.

Wars awaken fear, anger, and many difficult questions.
