The Bible shows that the laying on of hands is something serious: it can represent blessing, prayer, healing, spiritual authority, or commissioning. But precisely because of that, it should never be taken lightly.

In Deuteronomy 34:9, the Bible says that Joshua was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. But it was not a magical act. Moses did not transfer his own power to Joshua. God had already chosen Joshua, and the laying on of hands publicly confirmed that calling.

We also see that Jesus laid His hands on the sick and healed them. In Luke 4:40, it says that He placed His hands on every one of them and healed them. In Mark 10:16, Jesus took the children in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.

So yes, the laying on of hands can be a beautiful act when it comes from God, from sincere prayer, and from a pure heart. But the Bible also warns us that we should neither do it nor receive it carelessly.

Paul told Timothy:

“Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.”
— First Epistle to Timothy 5:22

That verse not only speaks about being careful when laying hands on others, but it also reminds us that spiritual matters require discernment. Not every spiritual act should be accepted blindly. Not every person who prays loudly has authority from God. Not everyone who stands behind a pulpit is walking in holiness.

There are hands that pray with love, but there are also hands that have been used to manipulate, control, abuse, and destroy. And when someone lives in hidden sin, uses faith to enrich themselves, or takes advantage of vulnerable people, we should not place our spiritual lives under their influence.

Jesus said:

“You will know them by their fruits.”
— Gospel of Matthew 7:16

Before allowing someone to place their hands on you, look at their fruit. Look at their character. Look at how they treat the weak. Look at whether they live what they preach. Look at whether they point people to Christ or try to make everyone depend on them.

This does not mean living in fear or rejecting every prayer. God still uses humble and sincere people to bless, heal, comfort, and restore others. But there is a difference between receiving prayer in faith and opening your spiritual life to just anyone because they have fame, a title, or a religious appearance.

The laying on of hands should not become a spectacle. It should not be emotional manipulation. It should not be a way to control people. It should be a holy, humble act centered on God.

That is why you should be careful about who places their hands on your head. Not because of superstition, but because of discernment. Your spiritual life is too valuable to hand over carelessly.

There are hands that bless when they are surrendered to God. But there are also hands that destroy when they are driven by pride, sin, and manipulation.

And above all, remember this: the true power is not in human hands. It is in Christ. Human hands may fail you, but the hands of Jesus will always restore the one who comes to Him sincerely.

I invite you to join me in this prayer:

Lord, give me discernment to recognize when something truly comes from You and when it does not. Help me not to be impressed by titles, emotions, or appearances. Guard my spiritual life, my heart, and my faith. And teach me to place my trust not in human hands, but in the hands of Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Somos Cristianos, connecting hearts with Christ.

Not every spiritual influence truly comes from God.
