For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’
and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”
Matthew 4:6

Satan was quoting Psalm 91:11-12, using a true promise from God, but with the wrong intention.

Then Jesus answered him:

“It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”
Matthew 4:7

That statement Jesus quoted came from Deuteronomy 6:16, where God was speaking to the people of Israel after they had doubted Him and tested Him in the wilderness.

And this is where something very important comes in:
what does it mean to “tempt” God?

In this context, tempting God does not mean trying to make Him sin, because God cannot sin. Here, the word “tempt” means putting God to the test in a reckless, demanding, or manipulative way. It is acting as if to say:

“I’m going to do whatever I want, and God has to rescue me.”
“I’m going to ignore wisdom, and God is obligated to protect me.”
“I’m going to walk straight into danger, and then demand a miracle.”

That is exactly what the devil wanted Jesus to do.

This was not an accidental fall. It was not persecution. It was not suffering for obeying God. It was voluntarily jumping into danger to force God to intervene.

And Jesus completely rejected that.

Jesus was not saying that God could not protect Him. Of course He could. Jesus knew perfectly well that the Father had the power to send angels, make a way, and deliver Him from any danger.

The issue was not God’s ability. The issue was the intention behind the act.

There is a difference between trusting God while walking in obedience, and crossing your arms, acting without wisdom, neglecting your responsibility, and then expecting God to fix everything as if your part did not matter.

Trusting God does not mean living without wisdom.
Trusting God does not mean ignoring consequences.
Trusting God does not mean doing the wrong thing and then saying, “God will take care of it.”

There are people who need a job, but they do not search, do not prepare a résumé, do not ask around, do not apply, do not make an effort… and then they say, “God will provide.”

And yes, God does provide. But many times His provision comes while we are walking, knocking on doors, planting seeds, and doing our part with humility.

Faith is not sitting still waiting for bread to fall from heaven when God has already given us hands, strength, intelligence, and opportunities to go look for it.

The same thing happens in families. Someone may say, “God is going to restore my home,” but they refuse to apologize, refuse to change their attitude, refuse to listen, refuse to let go of pride, and refuse to watch their words. They want a miracle in their home, but they do not want to obey God in the way they treat the people they love.

Many times we ask God to heal what we continue damaging ourselves.

Or it can happen with our health. A person may say, “God will take care of me,” while constantly abusing their body, ignoring warning signs, neglecting rest, nutrition, and healthy habits, and then becoming upset when consequences arrive.

God is merciful, yes. But we should never use His mercy as permission to live without wisdom.

Jesus teaches us that true faith does not force God to support our recklessness.

And this is powerful, because many times the devil does not tempt us only with obviously evil things. Sometimes he tempts us with beautiful words, religious phrases, and even Bible verses.

He told Jesus: “It is written…”

And yes, it was written. But it was being used the wrong way.

That is the danger of taking God’s promises without obeying God’s principles. Because a promise taken out of context can become a trap.

God promises to care for us, but He also calls us to be wise.
God promises to provide, but He also calls us to work, plant, and seek.
God promises restoration, but He also calls us to forgive, change, and obey.
God promises guidance, but He also calls us to listen.

True faith does not remove responsibility. It puts responsibility in its proper place.

There are things only God can do. Only God can open certain doors, touch certain hearts, heal deep wounds, and hold us up when we no longer have strength.

But there are also things that belong to us.

It is our responsibility to rise up.
It is our responsibility to seek.
It is our responsibility to put our life in order.
It is our responsibility to turn away from sin.
It is our responsibility to apologize.
It is our responsibility to care for what God has entrusted to us.

And this is where we often confuse faith with comfort. We say, “I’m waiting on God,” when in reality we simply do not want to move. We say, “God will provide,” when we do not want to knock on doors. We say, “God will change things,” when we ourselves refuse to change.

Waiting on God is not the same as avoiding responsibility.

Jesus did not jump from the temple. Not because He doubted the Father, but because He did not need to create danger just to prove God’s love.

And that is a deep lesson: we do not need to create unnecessary crises and then ask God to rescue us. We do not need to make bad decisions and then ask Him to remove the consequences. We do not need to live recklessly and then call our lack of wisdom “faith.”

Faith prays, but it also walks.
Faith waits, but it also obeys.
Faith trusts, but it also works.
Faith rests in God, but it does not hide behind excuses.

Maybe today this message is inviting us to examine our lives honestly.

Am I trusting God, or am I avoiding my responsibility?
Am I waiting on God, or am I using spiritual phrases to justify my passivity?
Am I walking in faith, or am I asking God to bless decisions He never told me to make?

This is not about living under pressure or believing everything depends on us. No. God is still God. His grace sustains us. His provision comes. His power still makes a way.

But mature faith understands something important: God will do what we cannot do, but He will not always do what we ourselves are supposed to do.

Let this reflection stay in your heart: do not confuse faith with irresponsibility. Do not use the name of God to cover disobedience. Do not ask heaven to fix what we continue damaging through our own choices.

Trusting God is beautiful, but it is also serious.

It means saying: “Lord, I depend on You, but I will also obey You. I will move when You tell me to move. I will plant seeds even when I still cannot see the harvest. I will do my part while still believing that You will do Yours.”

I invite you to join me in this prayer:

Lord, give me true faith, but also a responsible heart. Help me trust You without hiding behind excuses. Teach me to wait without becoming paralyzed, to walk without pride, and to obey without fear. Show me what part belongs to me, and give me humility to do it well. Deliver me from tempting Your love, Your patience, and Your mercy. Lead me in paths of wisdom, obedience, and sincere faith. Amen.

Somos Cristianos, connecting hearts with Christ.

This reflection reminds us that trusting God does not mean avoiding responsibility.
