There\u2019s something uncomfortable about these words of Jesus. They don\u2019t sound soft\u2026 they sound direct. Almost confronting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said it clearly in Matthew 5:33\u201337<\/strong>: we don\u2019t need to swear by anything; our \u201cyes\u201d should be yes and our \u201cno\u201d should be no\u2026 because anything beyond that comes from the evil one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that\u2026 hits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because He\u2019s not just talking about religious oaths. He\u2019s talking about something deeper: the integrity of the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the time when Jesus spoke these words, many people were used to making oaths so others would believe them. Saying \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d wasn\u2019t enough; they felt they had to swear by heaven, by earth, by Jerusalem, or by something sacred to make their words sound more serious. But Jesus was showing them that a person with integrity doesn\u2019t need to decorate their words with oaths. Their life should be enough proof of what they say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Jesus breaks that pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because swearing is the problem\u2026 but because it reveals the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When you need to add something extra to your words so people will believe you\u2026 it\u2019s because your words have already lost their weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that\u2019s where He says something strong: anything beyond a simple \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d\u2026 comes from the evil one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He\u2019s not saying that every unfulfilled promise literally makes you \u201cof the devil.\u201d He\u2019s pointing to something more subtle\u2026 deeper\u2026 more honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because the enemy has always worked the same way: distortion, deception, half-truths. As it says in John 8:44<\/strong>, he is the father of lies\u2026 and everything that moves away from truth somehow reflects that same pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And when we promise something we don\u2019t keep, when we say \u201cyes\u201d knowing we might not follow through, when we use words just to get through the moment\u2026 we step, without realizing it, into that same ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s not just a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s a disconnection between what you say\u2026 and who you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that, little by little, weakens the soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus didn\u2019t come to complicate our lives\u2026 He came to simplify them. To make our lives so clean, so transparent, that we don\u2019t need to add anything extra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In fact, this same teaching is repeated in James 5:12<\/strong>: let your \u201cyes\u201d be yes and your \u201cno\u201d be no\u2026 so that you don\u2019t fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So that when you say \u201cyes\u201d\u2026 people can rest. Because there are people who no longer trust what you say\u2026 not out of malice, but because of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Promises that weren\u2019t kept. And maybe, if we\u2019re honest\u2026 we\u2019ve all been there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But here\u2019s the beautiful part\u2026 the hopeful part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is not to condemn you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s to realign you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To bring you back to a life where your words regain their value\u2026 not because of what you say\u2026 but because of who you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let me leave you with this thought: is your \u201cyes\u201d really yes\u2026 or does it depend on the moment, the emotion, or convenience?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because in the end, it\u2019s not about speaking better\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s about being true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I invite you to join me in this prayer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Father, help me to be a person of integrity, that my words may be true and reflect what is in my heart.
