For example, some interpreted that law so loosely that they considered it valid to divorce a wife if she “did not please him” in some way, or even for something as simple as burning the food.

So Jesus steps in and cuts that mindset at the root.

He is not giving a complete list of all possible reasons.
He is correcting an abuse.

That’s why He mentions sexual immorality:
because it was a serious, clear, undeniable breaking of the marriage covenant.

But here is where we need to be very clear:

Jesus is not teaching that a person must stay in a relationship where there is abuse, violence, or constant destruction.

That’s not interpretation… that’s consistency with the whole message of the Bible.

God never approves:

someone being physically abused

someone being constantly humiliated

someone being emotionally or financially abandoned

someone living in fear inside their own home

That also destroys a marriage.

And the Bible itself confirms it.

In 1 Corinthians 7:15, it says that if a person is abandoned, they are not bound.

So no… everything does not come down to just one cause.

Now, let’s not go to the other extreme either.

Jesus is also making something very clear:

Marriage is not disposable.

It’s not something to end over:

boredom

normal arguments

personality differences

difficult seasons

That also needs to be said plainly.

So here is the full truth, clear and without confusion:

Jesus is closing the door to easy divorce

But He is not forcing anyone to live in abuse or destruction

Marriage is sacred… but so are life and dignity

If we put it in one simple idea:

Not every problem justifies divorce…
but not every marriage should be maintained at any cost.

And honestly…

This verse is not meant to point fingers at others.
It’s meant to make us reflect on how seriously we take what we promise.

Let me leave you with this thought…

Jesus didn’t come to complicate your life…
He came to lead you into the full truth.

And the full truth is never unjust…
even when it feels uncomfortable.

I invite you to pray with me:

Lord, teach me to understand Your Word with truth and balance.
Guard my heart from making careless decisions,
but also protect me from accepting what You do not approve.
Give me wisdom to live according to Your will.
Amen.

Jesus’ words about divorce in Matthew 5:32 can feel strong and even confusing at first.
