Not just because the Holy Spirit descended. Not just because there were tongues like fire. Not just because three thousand people believed in a single day. What truly shakes the heart when you read that chapter carefully is this: the one who stood up to preach was Peter.

Peter.

Not a scribe.
Not a Pharisee.
Not a teacher trained in religious schools.
Not a man known for his eloquence.
Not someone with a reputation for being calm, prudent, and perfect.

It was Peter, the fisherman.
The impulsive man.
The one who sometimes spoke before thinking.
The one who drew his sword and cut off Malchus’ ear.
The one who promised loyalty unto death, but ended up denying Jesus three times.
The one who once trembled before a servant girl who questioned him.
The one who knew the love of Christ, yes, but also knew very well his own fragility.

And right there is one of the most beautiful truths of the Gospel: God does not choose the most impressive people to glorify Himself. God takes the broken, the inconsistent, those who seem unqualified, and fills them with His Spirit so that it becomes clear that the glory belongs not to man, but to Him.

Before Acts 2, Peter had already walked with Jesus. He had seen miracles. He had heard teachings that no one else had heard. He had witnessed the glory of Christ. But he was not yet the Peter we see standing in Jerusalem with such powerful spiritual authority.

Why?

Because one thing is to have been close to Jesus, and another is to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

This does not mean Peter did not love the Lord before. He did. Nor does it mean Jesus had not already restored him. Of course He had. But in Acts 2 something decisive happens: the promise is fulfilled. The Holy Spirit descends upon them, fills them, ignites them, empowers them, and from that moment on, a new era begins.

It is no longer just Jesus walking physically with them.
Now it is the Spirit of God dwelling in them.

That changes everything.

That is why Peter, who had once denied Jesus out of fear, now stands up before a crowd. And not just any crowd. Jerusalem was filled with devout Jews from many nations. It was a charged, intense, observant atmosphere. There was noise, confusion, questions, and mockery. Some were amazed at what they saw; others mocked, saying they were drunk.

At that moment Peter stands “with the eleven.” That is important too. He no longer appears as an isolated, disordered man driven by his character. Now he stands firm, accompanied, positioned, aware of his moment. There is authority in him, but no longer the authority of impulse. It is the authority of the Spirit.

And then he speaks.

He does not improvise like an agitated man.
He does not shout like someone out of control.
He does not release empty emotions.
He preaches the Word.
He explains what is happening.
He connects the outpouring of the Spirit with the prophecy of Joel.
He exalts Jesus Christ.
He speaks of His death.
He speaks of His resurrection.
He speaks of His exaltation.
He confronts sin.
He calls for repentance.
And he clearly presents who Jesus is.

That is remarkable.

Because the same Peter who once seemed unstable now appears centered on Christ.
The same Peter who once acted out of emotion now speaks with truth and power.
The same Peter who once failed publicly now honors publicly the Lord he denied.

This was not the result of an oratory course.
It was not human training.
It was not a spiritual marketing strategy.
It was not natural charisma.

It was the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2 is not trying to make us admire Peter’s ability. It is showing us what happens when God takes control of a surrendered life. Peter did not suddenly become a great leader by personal effort. He was transformed from within. His mouth, his mind, his courage, his discernment, and his focus came under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

And here is something we must understand well: the miracle was not only that Peter spoke well. The miracle was that a man once dominated by his weaknesses became a useful instrument in the hands of God.

That gives hope.

Because there are people who think:
“I don’t know how to speak.”
“I get nervous.”
“I don’t have an education.”
“I don’t know how to explain the Bible.”
“I have mistakes in my past.”
“I’ve failed too much.”
“I’m not fit to lead.”

Peter also had human reasons to think that way.

But God did not reject him because of his past.
God did not cancel his calling because of his failures.
God did not say, “You denied Me, I can’t use you anymore.”
On the contrary, He restored him, affirmed him, and filled him.

And that is still real today.

The Holy Spirit is not an idea.
Not a passing emotion.
Not just a beautiful doctrine.
He is the living presence of God in His people.
He reminds us of Christ’s words.
He convicts of sin.
He gives us power to testify.
He guides us.
He strengthens us when we naturally could not.
He puts words in our mouths that do not come from our ability, but from His grace.

Peter did not stand up to speak because he suddenly felt capable. He stood up because the Holy Spirit had filled him.

And that makes all the difference.

Many people are waiting to feel capable before serving God.
But often God does not ask you to first be capable.
He asks you to be available.
Because He provides the ability.

In Acts 2, Peter did not become famous. He became useful.
He did not become important in a human sense. He became obedient.
He did not exalt himself. He exalted Christ.

And that is why the result was so powerful.

Scripture says that when they heard this, they were cut to the heart. That means Peter’s preaching did not just inform; it pierced the soul of the listeners. And this must be said clearly: it was not Peter alone who converted three thousand people. It was God working through anointed preaching and the power of the Holy Spirit touching hearts.

That prevents two errors.
First: believing everything depends on human talent.
Second: thinking God cannot use our voice because we are not impressive.

Three thousand people were not won by a magnetic personality, but by a true Gospel preached by a man filled with the Spirit.

And after that moment, something beautiful happens. Not only are three thousand converted. A different kind of community is born. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. There was reverence for God. There were signs and wonders. They shared what they had. They helped one another. There was generosity. There was unity. There was sincerity of heart.

In other words, the Holy Spirit did not only raise Peter to preach. He also formed a new people to live as a family.

This is the beginning of a new era.

Not only the first great Christian preaching to the masses.
Not only the first public call to repentance in the name of the risen Jesus.
But also the visible beginning of the Church as a living body, united, filled with power and practical love.

And Peter stands at the center of that historic moment, not because he was the most perfect, but because God wanted to show that true spiritual leadership is not born from ego, but from transformation.

Peter went from fisherman to spiritual leader, yes.
But not because he stopped being human.
But because the Holy Spirit took his surrendered humanity and put it at the service of the Kingdom.

That is what many need to hear today.

Maybe you do not know how to speak in public.
Maybe you stumble over your words.
Maybe you feel others explain better.
Maybe you are easily intimidated.
Maybe your past still shames you.
Maybe you have failed and think God no longer counts on you.
Maybe you see yourself as too small to do something great for Christ.

But Peter was also small in the eyes of the world.

And yet, when the Holy Spirit came upon him, his life became evidence that God can use a broken voice to release an eternal word.

It is not about trusting your ability to speak.
It is about depending on the Spirit of God.

It is not about never having failed.
It is about Christ having already lifted you up.

It is not about having the perfect profile.
It is about the Lord being glorified in you.

Acts 2 also shows us that true spiritual power does not produce spectacle; it produces repentance, truth, community, generosity, and a life centered on Jesus. When Peter spoke, he did not draw people to himself. He led them to Christ. And that is also a strong lesson for this time, where many want a platform, but few want holy fire; many want to be seen, but few want to be filled; many want to speak, but not all want to live surrendered.

Peter became a leader not because he sought prominence, but because he was transformed by the presence of God.

And perhaps that is the deepest key of this entire chapter: God is not only looking for prepared people to speak. He is looking for surrendered hearts to fill.

Let me leave this reflection in your heart: maybe you have spent too much time looking at your limitations, your fears, your mistakes, your emptiness, your failures, and your lack of preparation. But Acts 2 reminds us that when the Holy Spirit takes a life, a new story begins. Peter was not defined by his impulsiveness, nor by his denial, nor by his past. He was marked by the grace of Christ and by the power of the Spirit. And if God did that with Peter, He can also do wonders with you. He can give you words where there was silence. He can give you courage where there was fear. He can give you direction where there was confusion. He can give you spiritual influence where you once saw only an ordinary life. Do not disqualify yourself so quickly. Do not give up so easily. The Holy Spirit is real. He still works. He still raises up. He still transforms fishermen into preachers, simple people into bold witnesses, and wounded hearts into living pillars of His Church.

I invite you to join me in this prayer.

Lord, thank You because You do not choose the perfect, but You perfect those You call. Thank You for Peter’s life, because in him we see that Your grace is greater than our past, our failures, and our weaknesses. Thank You because You took him as an impulsive, fragile, and limited man, and turned him into a powerful instrument to proclaim Jesus Christ. Today we ask You to do that same work in us. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit. Remove fear, shame, insecurity, and every lie that makes us think we are not useful for Your work. Give us boldness to speak about Christ. Give us wisdom to live in obedience. Give us a clean, sensitive, and surrendered heart before You. And just as in Acts 2 a community was born that loved, helped, and walked in Your truth, form in us that same spirit of unity, generosity, and love. Lift up the timid, strengthen the fallen, restore those who have failed, and use our lives to glorify Your name. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Somos Cristianos, connecting hearts with Christ.

Peter wasn’t the most prepared, and he wasn’t perfect… yet he became the first to preach the Gospel with power.
