Stay with me for a moment, because this phrase of Jesus has confused many people over the years\u2026 and if we don\u2019t understand it correctly, we can draw completely wrong conclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jesus said in Gospel of Matthew 10:34:
\u201cDo not think that I came to bring peace on earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the Gospel of Matthew, which was written in Greek, the original word for \u201csword\u201d is m\u00e1khaira<\/strong>, which was not a large war sword, but a small knife used for cutting. Jesus was not speaking about violence, but about a truth that cuts and reveals what is in the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And yes\u2026 it sounds strong. Even uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because one might think: \u201cIsn\u2019t He love? Didn\u2019t He come to save, to unite, to bring peace?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n So\u2026 what did He really mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n First, we need to look at the context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He didn\u2019t say this in the middle of a war\u2026 He said it when He was sending His disciples out to preach. In Gospel of Matthew chapter 10, Jesus gives them a very honest warning: following Him would not be easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He told them they would be rejected. In other words\u2026 He didn\u2019t sell them a comfortable, easy faith. And right in that context, He says the part about the \u201csword.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now, something very important: Jesus was not promoting violence. In fact, in other passages He teaches to love your enemies, to forgive, to turn the other cheek. So it would be contradictory to think that here He is calling for war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The \u201csword\u201d He speaks about is not physical\u2026 it is spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the truth of Christ enters a person\u2019s life, it begins to separate things. And this is where confusion comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some think Jesus came to divide on purpose, like a strategy\u2026 like \u201cdivide and conquer.\u201d Jesus does not divide out of evil intent\u2026 Let me explain it simply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Imagine a completely dark room. The moment light enters, what happens? And what was hidden can no longer stay the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s what Jesus does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did not come to destroy relationships\u2026 He came to bring light. Some receive it. That\u2019s why Jesus said that even within a family, some would believe and others would not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because He wants to break families\u2026 And this is very important to apply to real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because many people today are experiencing this and don\u2019t understand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You begin to draw closer to God\u2026 You leave habits behind. And suddenly\u2026 you don\u2019t fit the same in certain environments anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People who used to be close to you now see you differently. And you start asking: That\u2019s where you understand this word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s not that you\u2019re doing something wrong\u2026 And the light, without trying to divide, reveals who wants to walk in it\u2026 and who doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus did not come to create conflict\u2026 But truth never leaves everything the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It forces a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stay the same\u2026 And that\u2026 inevitably draws a line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let me leave you with this thought to keep in your heart: If today you feel like you are losing things, relationships, or comfort because you are following Christ\u2026 don\u2019t be discouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You are not being divided\u2026 you are being transformed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And what God is forming in you\u2026 is worth more than any superficial peace you had before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I invite you to join me in this prayer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lord, today I understand Your words better. Teach me to live in Your light, with love, without pride, without hardness\u2026 And if there are things in me that need to be cut away, do it Yourself, with Your wisdom. That some would not listen to them.
That even within their own families there would be conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He told them the truth from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He never did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not people out of spite\u2026 but what aligns with God from what does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
division happens as a result of truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everything seems calm, at \u201cpeace\u201d\u2026 but it\u2019s a false peace, because you can\u2019t see anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everything is revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And when light enters, not everyone responds the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others reject it.
And that difference\u2026 creates separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
but because each person responds differently to the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and something changes inside you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You change the way you think.
You start seeing life differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some drift away.
Others question you.
Some even get upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy, if I\u2019m just trying to do what\u2019s right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
it\u2019s that the light has come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He came to offer truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
or change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
not every conflict in your life is a sign that something is wrong\u2026 sometimes it is evidence that God is working in you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Help me not to misunderstand Your truth or to be afraid when it challenges my life.
Give me a firm heart to follow You, even when others don\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
but with conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
