While many hid out of fear, there were women who remained close to Jesus in His most painful hour. The Gospels mention several names at the crucifixion and on the morning of the resurrection: Mary, the mother of Jesus; Mary Magdalene; Mary the mother of James/Jacob and Joses; Salome; and Joanna clearly appears among the women who went to the tomb and later announced what they had seen. Additionally, the accounts mention that there were “other women” with them. So, when we harmonize the Gospels, we can indeed speak of a faithful group of women who followed Jesus from Galilee, stood at the cross, witnessed the burial, and were part of the resurrection morning, even if not every Gospel lists the exact same names at every moment.

There is something deeply moving here. These women did not just appear at the end. The Bible tells us that many of them had been following Jesus from before, serving Him and even supporting His ministry with their own resources. They were not casual observers. They were faithful disciples. They walked with Him when there were miracles, but also when rejection, humiliation, and the cross came. Their faithfulness did not depend on the atmosphere. They were not with Jesus only when everything looked glorious. They stayed when following Him hurt.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, shows us a silent pain that is almost impossible to describe. She was not watching just any man die. She was watching her Son—the One she carried, the One she raised, the promised Messiah—suffer on the cross. Even in that moment, Jesus thought of her and entrusted her to the beloved disciple. That reveals something beautiful: even in the middle of redemption, Jesus did not stop showing love, order, and care. Mary was there, deeply wounded inside, but standing firm. Sometimes the deepest faith does not speak much—it simply remains.

Mary Magdalene also shines in a very special way. She had been deeply transformed by Jesus. Luke tells us she was one of the women healed by Him, and afterward she appears again and again among the most faithful. She stood at the cross, observed where His body was laid, and returned to the tomb at dawn. In the Gospel of John, she is found weeping outside the empty tomb, and there she receives the incredible privilege of encountering the risen Christ. This is not a small detail. The woman who may have been rejected by many becomes one of the first witnesses of Jesus’ victory over death. God often honors those the world overlooks.

Mary the mother of James/Jacob and Joses also appears as a consistent figure. She is sometimes less noticed because not much is said about her, but there she is—present in the pain, watching from a distance at the crucifixion, and observing where Jesus was laid. That teaches us something important. In God’s Kingdom, there are people who do not make noise, who are not in the spotlight, but who are faithful. And God sees them. Quiet faithfulness carries great weight in heaven.

Salome is also part of this courageous group. Mark mentions her at the cross, and Matthew refers to “the mother of the sons of Zebedee,” whom many identify as Salome. Not all the details about her are equally explicit, but her presence among the faithful women is clear. She stayed. And that matters deeply, because in moments of testing, we discover who truly loves. Some love when everything is easy; others love even when they understand nothing. These women probably did not fully understand what was happening, but their love kept them close.

And Joanna is a beautiful example as well. Luke mentions her among the women who followed Jesus and supported Him with their resources, and later again among those who went to the tomb and announced what they had seen. What stands out is that she was the wife of Chuza, a manager in Herod’s household. This suggests that God also called someone connected to influence and structure and brought her into a group of faithful disciples. In other words, Jesus was forming a spiritual family where different backgrounds, stories, and social levels were united. At the cross and at the tomb, all were equalized by their love for Christ.

Now, there is an important detail we should not overlook. Not all these women are mentioned in every moment with the same clarity. For example, regarding the burial, Mark specifically says that Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where Jesus was laid. Matthew mentions Mary Magdalene and “the other Mary.” Then on resurrection morning, Luke names Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, along with other women; Matthew highlights Mary Magdalene and the other Mary; John focuses especially on Mary Magdalene. This does not contradict the message. Instead, it shows that there was a real group of faithful women, and each Gospel highlights different names depending on its perspective.

And here is one of the deepest truths in this story: while some disciples were paralyzed by fear and others confused, these women kept loving, kept seeking, kept serving. They had no swords, no political power, no official voice in their society, yet they were present where many men were not. This is not about comparison—it is about revealing that God looks at the heart, at faithfulness, and at genuine love. In the darkest moment, they did not fix the situation, but they remained. And sometimes, remaining is one of the purest forms of love.

It also deeply moves me to think about this: they went to the tomb when everything still seemed lost. They went with sorrow, with tears, with questions. They were not celebrating—they were grieving. And still, they walked toward the place of pain. And right there, in that place where everything seemed finished, God gave them news that changed the history of the world. What a powerful message. There are people today walking toward an emotional tomb: a loss, a betrayal, a diagnosis, a disappointment, a spiritual failure. They walk with tears, tired, without answers. But the God of the resurrection still meets those who seek Him with love, even when their hearts are broken.

That Jesus appeared first to women carries deep spiritual meaning. In a culture where women’s testimony was often undervalued, heaven chose women to carry the first announcement of the resurrection. God broke human expectations. What many did not value, He honored. What society might overlook, Christ turned into messengers of the greatest hope. This reminds us that God does not choose the way the world chooses. He sees faithfulness, genuine love, perseverance, gratitude, and a surrendered heart.

These five women, seen together, give us a complete picture. Mary, the mother of Jesus, represents love that remains even when the soul is pierced with pain. Mary Magdalene represents the restored life that never forgets where God brought it from. Mary the mother of James represents quiet faithfulness. Salome represents the one who stays close even without understanding everything. Joanna represents the one who uses her position and resources to serve Christ. They are different, but united by something greater: they loved Jesus until the very end.

Take a moment to reflect on this: the world often remembers those who spoke loudly, led crowds, or held power. But God chose to forever record the names of women who simply did not abandon Jesus. And that alone is deeply moving. Maybe today you feel like you are not doing anything great. Maybe you are just crying, enduring, serving quietly, praying in silence, holding on to your faith the best you can. Do not underestimate that. In God’s eyes, staying close to Christ in difficult times means everything.

I invite you to join me in this prayer.

Lord Jesus, thank You for the testimony of these faithful women. Thank You because they teach us that true love does not run away in times of pain. Give us a heart like theirs, one that follows You not only in beautiful moments but also in difficult ones. Help us remain close to You when we do not understand, when we cry, and when everything feels silent. And just as You turned the sorrow of the tomb into the announcement of resurrection, turn our dark nights into mornings of hope. Amen.

In Somos Cristianos, connecting hearts with Christ.

They didn’t run… they stayed when it hurt the most.
