And yes, the Bible clearly says in John 2:11 that this was the “beginning of signs” in Cana of Galilee. In other words, it was the first public miracle that John presents as an open sign of His glory.

But when we continue reading the Gospels, we find other early works of Jesus that also deserve attention, even though they cannot always be placed into a perfectly precise chronology.

This is where something important needs to be explained carefully. There are events the Bible clearly tells us about, but it does not always give us the exact date or the full order in which they happened. That is not an error. The Gospels were not written like a modern timeline, minute by minute. They were written as true testimonies that reveal who Jesus was and what He came to do.

So if we want to explore something deeper and different, we can look at two early works of Jesus that many people do not place alongside the story of Cana: the deliverance of Mary Magdalene and the miraculous catch of fish with Peter. Both reveal something powerful about the heart of Christ.

First: The Deliverance of Mary Magdalene

The Bible tells us in Luke 8:2 that Mary Magdalene was a woman “from whom seven demons had gone out.” With just one sentence, the Gospel lets us see that Jesus had already done something extraordinary in her life.

This was not something small. It was not just emotional improvement. It was a deep spiritual deliverance.

Although the Bible does not narrate the exact moment of this deliverance, nor does it tell us precisely whether it happened before or after the miracle of the wine, it does show us the result: when Mary appears following Jesus, serving Him, and remaining faithful near Him, she is already a woman restored by His power.

And that changes the way we see her.

Sometimes people mention Mary Magdalene only as a secondary character in the story, but in reality her testimony speaks of an enormous transformation. Jesus did not simply comfort her. He rescued her from a terrible condition of spiritual oppression. He lifted her from a broken life and turned her into a faithful, devoted, and grateful follower.

Mary Magdalene later appears as one of the women who accompanied Jesus, who supported His ministry, who stayed close during the most difficult moments, and who remained when many others walked away.

This means the work Jesus did in her was not superficial. It produced love, loyalty, and a completely new life.

There is a beautiful lesson here for us. Many people look fine on the outside, but inside they are trapped by wounds, guilt, fears, addictions, memories, or invisible chains. From the very beginning, Jesus showed that He did not come merely to give inspiring messages. He came to break chains.

Mary Magdalene reminds us that the Lord can take a life marked by pain and turn it into a life filled with dignity, purpose, and hope. What the enemy tried to destroy, Christ can restore.

Second: The Miraculous Catch of Fish

The miraculous catch of fish is recorded in Luke 5:1–11, and it is one of the most human, powerful, and beautiful scenes at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.

Peter and the other fishermen had worked all night. They had done what they knew how to do. They used their experience, their effort, and their discipline.

Yet they caught nothing.

That scene looks very similar to the lives of many people today. People who are tired, frustrated, and empty. People who try their best but still return home with empty hands.

Then Jesus stepped into Peter’s boat.

First He taught the crowd from the boat. Then He told Peter to do something that seemed illogical: to go back and cast the nets again.

Peter could have refused. He could have said, “Lord, I am the fisherman, not You.” He could have explained that it was already daytime and they had tried all night.

But instead he answered humbly:

“Because You say so, I will let down the nets.”

And that is when the miracle happened.

The nets filled with so many fish that they began to break. They had to call other boats for help. The boats were so full they nearly sank.

But the most powerful part was not the fish.

It was Peter’s reaction.

When he saw what had happened, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”

Peter understood something in that moment. He was not standing before an ordinary teacher. He was standing before someone holy, someone with authority over creation, someone who could step into the most ordinary moment of a man’s life and turn it into a revelation of God.

And it was in that moment that Jesus did something even greater.

He changed Peter’s destiny.

Jesus told him that from that day forward he would be a fisher of people.

That means the miracle was not just about fish. It was about calling. It was about showing Peter that his life would no longer revolve around nets and boats, but around the eternal purpose of God.

The miraculous catch teaches us that Jesus can enter the most ordinary parts of our lives and turn them into a calling. He can use frustration to open a door. He can use empty nights to lead us into a life filled with purpose.

What These Two Stories Teach Us Today

These two early works of Jesus reveal something beautiful. Before the great signs that everyone remembers, Jesus was already restoring lives and calling people into purpose.

He freed Mary from invisible chains.
He lifted Peter from exhaustion and gave him a new destiny.

One story reveals liberation.
The other reveals direction.

Together they show us that before the world saw the famous miracles, Jesus was already healing broken lives and changing hearts.

And He still does the same today.

Maybe you are not in a celebration like the wedding where water became wine. Maybe you feel more like Mary, struggling with things no one sees. Or maybe you feel like Peter, tired after trying again and again without results.

But Jesus remains the same.

He still sets people free.
He still calls people.
He still enters ordinary lives with compassion, authority, and power.

Let this reflection stay in your heart: many times we look for God only in the big visible miracles, in the dramatic moments everyone celebrates. But God also works quietly. Before the world sees the miracle, He is already restoring hearts, breaking chains, and preparing destinies.

And when Jesus begins a work in someone’s life, He does not leave it unfinished.

I invite you to join me in this prayer.

Lord Jesus, thank You because Your power is still at work today. Thank You because You free those who are bound and call those who feel empty. Just as You transformed the life of Mary Magdalene and changed Peter’s destiny, work in us as well. Break every chain, heal every wound, and step into our empty nights to fill them with Your purpose. Help us trust Your word even when we are tired, and give us the courage to follow You with grateful hearts. Amen.

Somos Cristianos, connecting hearts with Christ.

Before the famous miracle where Jesus turned water into wine, He was already changing lives.
