They do not know exactly what is about to happen, but the atmosphere feels solemn. Something important is about to take place.

And then something completely unexpected happens.

The Bible says:

“He rose from supper, laid aside his outer garment, and taking a towel, tied it around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet.”
John 13:4–5

For us today, washing feet may seem like only a symbolic gesture. But in those days it was very different.

In homes of the ancient world, especially in Israel, people walked long distances on dusty roads wearing open sandals. Their feet arrived dirty, tired, and covered with dust. Because of this, when entering a house, someone had to wash the visitor’s feet.

But that task was not done by the owner of the house.
Not even by a guest.

That was the job of the lowest servant.

It was the most humble job.

And this is the part that touches the heart.

Jesus was not just any servant.
He was the Teacher.
The Lord.
The one who had healed the sick, calmed storms, and raised the dead.

And yet, He kneels in front of his own disciples… and begins to wash their feet.

Imagine the silence in that moment.

No one expected it.

Peter, as he often did, reacted first. When he saw what Jesus was doing, he felt uncomfortable.

“Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
John 13:6

Peter could not understand it.

For him, everything seemed backwards.

The Teacher should not serve the disciple.
The disciple should serve the Teacher.

But Jesus was teaching something much deeper than a simple lesson in humility.

Jesus was revealing the heart of God.

The true God is not like the leaders of this world.
He does not rule from arrogance.
He does not seek to be served.

God serves.

Jesus Himself explained it later:

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”
Mark 10:45

When Jesus knelt down to wash the feet of his disciples, He was showing what the Kingdom of God is like.

In this world, many seek power, recognition, and position.
Many want to be first, to be important, to be the ones in charge.

But in the Kingdom of God, the logic is different.

The greatest is the one who serves.
The one who loves.
The one who humbles himself.

Jesus did not only speak about humility…
He lived it.

And there is something even deeper in this scene.

Jesus did not only wash the feet of Peter, John, or Matthew.

He also washed the feet of Judas.

Yes, Judas.

The same one who, hours later, would betray Him.

Jesus knew perfectly well what Judas was going to do.
He knew he would hand Him over for money.

And yet…
He washed his feet.

That reveals something astonishing about the love of Christ.

Jesus does not only love those who deserve it.
He loves even those who betray Him.

He loves even when He knows He will be rejected.

That is the kind of love that changes hearts.

After finishing, Jesus said something that remains a lesson for all of us:

“If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”
John 13:14

He was not saying that we must literally repeat the same action.

He was teaching a much deeper principle.

The followers of Christ must live with the same spirit.

To serve.
To help.
To forgive.
To love even when it is not easy.

Because anyone can love when they are treated well.

But loving when people fail you… that reflects the heart of God.

Today many people seek recognition, applause, and positions.

But Jesus reminds us of something simple and powerful:

True greatness is found in serving.

Maybe we will not literally wash someone’s feet.

But every day we have opportunities to do it in other ways.

When you help someone without expecting anything in return.
When you forgive.
When you listen to someone who is suffering.
When you choose to love even when no one sees it.

That is where the heart of Christ begins to be reflected.

Because true Christianity is not only shown with words…
It is shown with humble love.

Take a moment to reflect on this.

If Jesus, being the Lord, knelt down to serve…
how many times do we still look to be served?

Maybe today God is reminding us of something very simple:

Serving does not make us small.
It makes us more like Christ.

I invite you to join me in this prayer.

Lord,
teach us to have a humble heart.
Help us not to seek to be the most important, but to learn to serve as You did.
Clean our pride, our ego, and our need for recognition.
Give us a heart willing to love, help, and serve others, even when no one sees it.
May our lives reflect the love You taught us.
Amen.

We Are Christians, connecting hearts with Christ.

One of the most
