I’m talking about something deeper. I’m talking about shaping their hearts, their character, and their relationship with God.

The Bible has much to say about this. When we read it calmly, we realize that God never left the education of children to chance. From the beginning, He gave clear principles for parents.

One of the best-known texts on this subject says:

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
(Proverbs 22:6)

This verse is not a magic formula, but it is a clear direction. The spiritual formation a child receives in their early years leaves deep marks that often accompany them throughout their life.

Raising children according to the Bible begins with understanding something fundamental: children are not a coincidence or a burden. They are a gift from God.

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.”
(Psalm 127:3)

When a parent understands this, their perspective changes. They no longer see their children only as a responsibility, but as a mission. God entrusts a life into our hands so that we may guide it.

That is why spiritual education should not depend only on the church, a teacher, or a pastor. The Bible is very clear that the primary responsibility belongs to parents.

In Deuteronomy we find a powerful teaching:

“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”
(Deuteronomy 6:6-7)

This passage shows something very interesting. The teaching of God is not limited to a formal moment. It is transmitted in everyday life. In conversations, in decisions, in difficult moments, and in the way parents respond to problems.

Children learn by watching.

They learn when they see their parents pray.
They learn when they see how their parents react to injustice.
They learn when they see how their parents ask for forgiveness or how they forgive.

In other words, spiritual education is not taught only with words. It is taught through example.

Another important aspect mentioned in the Bible is discipline. Today this subject can be uncomfortable for many people, but in the Scriptures discipline always appears connected to love.

“Whoever spares the rod hates their child, but the one who loves their child is careful to discipline them.”
(Proverbs 13:24)

Biblical discipline is not violence or anger. It is formation. It is helping a child understand that their decisions have consequences. It is guiding them so they learn to distinguish between what is right and what is wrong.

But the Bible also warns parents about something very important:

“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
(Ephesians 6:4)

That means correction should not destroy a child’s heart. It should not humiliate them or make them feel worthless. The goal is not to break their spirit, but to build their character.

Perhaps one of the greatest challenges today is that we live in a culture that is constantly educating our children. Television, the internet, social media, and friends are all influencing the way they think.

That is why it is more important than ever for parents to be present. Not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually.

Children need to hear things like this from their parents:

That God loves them.
That their value does not depend on what others think.
That truth matters.
That integrity is worth more than popularity.

When a child grows up hearing and seeing these principles, their heart develops in a different way.

The goal of raising children is not simply that they achieve material success. Many people gain money, fame, or recognition, but lack character, faith, or purpose.

The biblical goal is deeper.

To raise men and women who love God, who live with integrity, and who become light in the world.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
(Proverbs 1:7)

When a child learns to respect God, many other things begin to align in their life.

Raising children will never be easy. There will be mistakes, moments of frustration, and difficult decisions. No parent is perfect.

But there is something that should never be missing: prayer.

A parent who prays for their children is planting seeds that may not be seen immediately, but that God can make grow at the right time.

Sometimes children walk away, make wrong decisions, or go through difficult stages. But the seeds of truth that were planted in their childhood often remain hidden in their hearts, waiting for the right moment to grow again.

That is why raising children is not just a job for a few years. It is an eternal investment.

And when parents decide to guide their children toward God, they are leaving a legacy that goes far beyond any material wealth.

In the end, we understand something simple but powerful: the greatest gift a parent can give a child is not money or success, but showing them the path to God.

At Somos Cristianos, we connect hearts with Christ.

Raising children is not only about teaching them to study or behave well.
