The Medes first formed a strong kingdom, but later they were united under the leadership of the Persians. Together they built a powerful empire that, without even knowing it, would become an instrument in God’s hands to fulfill His plan for Israel.

Stay with me for a moment… because sometimes we think God is late, but history proves He never arrives too late.

Israel had lost everything. Jerusalem was in ruins. The temple destroyed. Families separated. The people who once sang in Zion were now weeping by the rivers of Babylon.

It was not random. It was consequence. For years, God had warned them through the prophets. But the heart of the people became hardened. Then the exile came. Babylon, powerful and imposing, seemed invincible.

Yet while Israel was weeping, God was already writing the next chapter.

Long before it happened, the Lord spoke through the prophet Isaiah about a man who was not yet king. He mentioned him by name:

“Who says of Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd, and he shall perform all My pleasure…’” (Isaiah 44:28)

Imagine that. Decades before Persia conquered Babylon, God had already pointed to Cyrus. The plan was already in place.

When the Babylonian empire fell to the Medes and the Persians, something shifted in heaven before it shifted on earth. The book of Daniel reminds us that God rules over kingdoms:

“He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings.” (Daniel 2:21)

It was not merely military strategy. It was divine sovereignty.

After Babylon fell, the heart of Cyrus was moved. He was not an Israelite. He did not worship the God of Israel as the people did. But God stirred him.

“In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus…” (Ezra 1:1)

And he decreed something unthinkable: Israel could return. The temple would be rebuilt. What seemed like the end was only a pause.

But the story did not end with the decree. Returning was not easy. The city was destroyed. There was opposition. There was fear. There was exhaustion. Yet God was still present.

The same God who allowed the exile was the God who opened the door for the return.

And here is something that deeply moves me: God did not just restore a city. He restored identity. He restored worship. He restored purpose.

Because exile was not abandonment. It was discipline with purpose. And deliverance was not luck. It was the fulfillment of a promise.

Sometimes we also live through seasons of “Babylon.” Moments when everything feels like it has collapsed. When we believe God has gone silent. When we think past decisions have left us without hope.

But the God who raised up Persia and the Medes is still the same.

He moves hearts. He moves governments. He moves circumstances. He moves invisible processes while we only see the ruins.

Before Israel left Babylon, God had already spoken. Before the empire fell, there was already a plan. Before the people wept, comfort had already been prepared.

And those Persians, whose empire lasted for centuries, are now part of the history that shaped modern Iran. Though the empire disappeared, its cultural heritage, language, and identity continue in the Iranian people today. What was Persia in the Bible now largely occupies the territory of Iran.

Let me leave you with this reflection: if you are in a difficult season, do not confuse discipline with abandonment or silence with absence. God is still ruling, even when you cannot see it.

Maybe today you do not see the signed decree. Maybe you are still sitting by the river weeping. But if God promised restoration, He will fulfill it.

I invite you to join me in this prayer…

Lord, thank You because You rule over everything. Even when I do not understand my process, You are in control. Forgive my mistakes, strengthen my faith, and help me trust that just as You restored Israel, You can restore my life. Stir up the “Cyruses” I may need, move whatever You must move, and fulfill Your purpose in me. Amen.

We Are Christians, connecting hearts with Christ.

When Babylon seemed unstoppable and Israel was in ruins, God had already prepared restoration.
