On social media, thousands of young people are talking about something called \u201ctherians.\u201d They wear masks, imitate animal movements, and say they internally identify as wolves, cats, or foxes. Some describe it as something spiritual. Others see it as emotional identity. Others simply found a community where they feel accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This phenomenon is not entirely new: the word therianthropy<\/em> has historical background and has been used for decades to describe ideas of identifying with animals. But the explosion of videos and online communities has brought it to a much wider audience of teenagers who see it as a form of identity, belonging, and personal expression\u2014beyond just a simple trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many who participate in this trend speak of a personal \u201cjourney.\u201d The goal, according to them, is to discover their \u201ctrue self,\u201d connect with their \u201ctheriotype,\u201d and feel more authentic. For some, it is a search for emotional freedom; for others, a way to escape social pressure, anxiety, or rejection. It is an attempt to find identity, meaning, and community in a world where many young people feel they do not belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But if we look deeper\u2026 this is not really about animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is about identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When a generation begins to seriously question whether it is human, something deeper has broken inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bible begins with a firm declaration that does not change with trends:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSo God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.\u201d (Genesis 1:27)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That means your identity does not come from what you feel today. It comes from what God said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The problem is not admiring nature. God created animals and called them good. The problem begins when the human heart starts searching in the creature for what can only be found in the Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is not new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the Bible there was a powerful man, King Nebuchadnezzar. He became so full of pride that he forgot who he was before God. The judgment was severe. He lived like an animal, eating grass, separated from human reason (Daniel 4). It was not evolution. It was degradation. And his restoration came when he lifted his eyes to heaven and acknowledged the Most High.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When a human being disconnects from God, clarity is lost. There are also cultures that teach reincarnation into animals, that identity is a changing cycle. But Scripture is clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cJust as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.\u201d (Hebrews 9:27)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We are not souls floating between species. If I am honest\u2026 behind this trend I do not see rebellion alone. I see loneliness. I see young people who do not know where they fit. I see hearts longing to belong. And when the world offers a label that makes them feel special, they embrace it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the Gospel offers something infinitely greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.\u201d (John 1:12)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Child of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is the highest identity possible. The world is confused because it removed God from the center. Truth is redefined. But God does not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the real question is not: Maybe the deeper question is: If you reading this have ever felt disconnected, strange, out of place\u2026 let me tell you something with love: you do not need to invent a new identity to feel special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You already are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You were created in the image of the Creator of the universe. Let this stay in your heart: when a human being forgets who he is in God, he begins trying temporary identities. But none of them replace eternal truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I invite you to pray with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lord, in the middle of so much confusion, help us remember who we are. If the world tries to redefine us, anchor us in Your truth. Heal this generation that searches for identity everywhere except in You. Remind us that we are created in Your image and called children through Christ. Restore clarity.
